Well it records what you listen to, and then you get recommended artists based on it. Best source of new music for me has been my neighbours, which are people with the best musical compatibility with me, so anything they have which I don't have, I'll probably like. Great for finding new music.

Just download the last.fm software tom off the http://www.last.fm/tools/downloads page, it automatically scans for music playing programs and installs for you.
The old scrobbling plugins won't work with last fm now, you have to use their software.
