Looking for a new Laptop for uni, which basically i'm goin to use for basic office tasks, emails, my itunes, then more needy applications like FM, and a few other games. What sort of stuff should be ok for me? Do i really need a Turion x 2 processor, or would i suffice with a Athlon 64 x2? Same with the intel processors...

I've been looking at the HP Pavilion's because i quite like the look of them, but theres so many different models i'm a bit lost. I've found an offer for the DV6529em:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 TK53 Mobile Technology
1024 MB RAM
120 GB

http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/uk/en/ho/WF25a/21675-38187-38191-38191-38191-79744946.html you can see it on there basically. If theres any more of these models you'd recommend that are no-more than £500ish then go for it. :)

The offer also includes a HP printer/scanner thing, and i could get it for just short of £400. Any suggestions and advice please?

edit: Or how about this? http://www.microdirect.co.uk/(22016)HP-Pavilion-Notebook-DV6277-Intel-Core2-Duo.aspx

The choice drives me crazy!:(

Have a look on www.cheap-it.com for laptops, my dad bought a Dell Recon on there for £300 that's been class, came with a full Dell Warranty too.

Great deals if you're not bothered by the whole Reconditioned stuff, but the fact that they offer full warrantys is great. Can get some real decent deals on there too.

Theres a HP PAVILION DV6226 on there (Intel Core Duo T2060, 1gb RAM, 120gb HDD) for £499 which looks like it should suit your requirements.

or (if you're willing to spend the extra £22 :p), there's a TOSHIBA A135-S4447 with similar spec but 2gb of RAM for £522

The others you looked at look like good deals too, a CoreDuo or Core2Duo would be nice to run FM, and at least 1gb of RAM... with 2gb for those few extra leagues :p I don't really know much about the AMD processors at the moment due to the fact i've converted back to Intel purely because of the Core2Duo being great value for money.

Don't if you already find a decent laptop, but I advice you a Sony Vaio FZ11S. I have this one and Iam very happy with it. Costs 1400 euros.

Specifications:
Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T7100 1.80GHz
2 GB DDR 2 RAM
160 GB/5400rpm harddisk
15,4 inch widescreen
NVidia GeForce 8400 GT GPU
Very nice design and much more

Disadvantadge:
Windows Vista, but this uses each new laptop.

Or maybe you can buy a MacBook if you are interested in these things.

It's worrying how little i knew about laptops three weeks ago, and after working at PCWorld for that time period, now know a worringly large amount about them.

And here's me thinking PCWorld would teach me nothing (Y)

Of course, in terms of prices, i'm way off track (H)
