The best I've done is go up about 3000 prestige points or so at the end of one season, and the bankroll went up considerably. And that's all for bringing Oxford United to the Second Division! Not shabby... but here's my main issue with career mode.
I started another season just to test this, and before I started, I went into Team Management and Player Swap and absolutely STACKED Boston in the Third Division. Our starting lineup (3-4-1-2) is Kahn, Cannavaro, Maldini, Nesta, Zidane, Ronaldinho, Nedved, Totti, Del Piero, Vieri, and Ronaldo. Our subs are just as nasty, with Henry, Van Nistelrooy, and plenty of other players just chillin' on the bench. Needless to say, a team that would be unheard of. So I simulated a season, wanting to quickly get some more prestige points and figured we'd win everything.... NOPE.
Our team finsihed 15th or so in the Third Division (after I started them out going about 10-0-0, with 2 goals against and 30 for, on Professional), and I "earned" 500 prestige points. Next season, we did worse, finsihing in 17th place. Then I "improved" to 13th. Seems to me like the game doesn't actually give a s*** about who is on your team - all the simulations are based on the team's prestige, apparently.
ALSO. Notice that Man U and other big Premiership teams get knocked out kind of early in most domestic cup games? Not that its too unrealistic - I can accept the fact that they may lose 4-1 to a second division team because they'll usually play reserves (at least, the real Man U and other top Premiership teams would). However, if you ever get matched up against them, they ALWAYS play their best lineup. WTF? Not too cool.
AND LASTLY. Curse the injury bug. Has anyone else had this hit their team? I was in my third season with Man U., Had Ronaldo, Van Nistelrooy, Donovan (trained him up to about an 89), Forlan, and Bellion ALL INJURED AT THE SAME TIME. So for about four games, I had to play midfielders at forward, defenders in the midfield. Stupid, if you ask me. Human players get hurt WAY too easily compared to the computer's.
Before I go, just wanted to say one more thing - someone had said something about a player's attributes going up in the game. Ronaldinho, on Man U. for me, goes from a 93 in the pre-game to a 97 once the game is on. Ferdinand goes from 86 to an 89, also.
That's it. I'm going to go watch UConn Basketball because my local TV stations don't like broadcasting any soccer games.

I am playing career mode with colchester united (div 2). I promoted them to the premier league in two seasons. there was a budget of 3m in my first season, and 5.5m in the second.(understandable). but once i got to the premier league, i won the efa trophy (beat real madrid in the finals),FA cup(some third division team) and stood 3rd in the league, behind chelsea and man utd.(arsenal and liverpool got relegated!!!!!!! 
).now i got hiked up for the next season....was very happy to see 7000 prestige points and five stars shining beside my name. and what money do i get? A LAME 9.3m!!!!...this is sh**. i play in wc for avg and pro for super teams. i simulated only about 10-12 games per season. and this is what i get...
i transfered many players in the previous seasons(nihat, kanoute, kaladze, simic, gronkjaer, scholl,abbiati,le tallec etc)...and this season i transfered kuranyi from a german team and andy cole. andy cole's value was 2.8m.i bought him for 3.1. after my first game, i saw an offer, when i checked it, they were offering 4m! ...like, this game has no sense about transfers!!! as a result cole only played one week with me.
once i tried to buy damien duff. his value is 2.0m.(he wasnt listed) i offered 2.3 (all that i had then) and got rejected. come next week, i sold some of my players to get my money upto 4.8m. when i checked chelsea's list that week, duff was listed. i offered him 2.1, 2.3, 2.5, ................ 4.8m and they denied!.....like he was listed and i was offering more than double his value.........
when these kind of things happen, u suddenly lose interest in ur game. i am a man utd fan, and b/c man utd were the cream in fifa 2004, i chose a lower div team with a similar name. after playing 3 hard seasons and making a top class team which drew twice (1-1A and 0-0H) with real madrid if the efa final, i only get a minuscle budget....this sucks bad.................

so what tips do u guyz who r doin well in the transfer market have to offer? Should u bid ur first bid for a player over his value or his exact value?
if you don`t bid at least 2 or 3 mio over players value they won`t sell and you lose precious points
if they do you can consider yourself lucky
I allways bid more...for the superstars I normaly bid 5 mio or more
But once I could not buy Davids allthough I bid 7 mio more then his value...

What i dont like is that even when you are a 5 stars manager.... u still have to fight for 2 star players who cost 2 millions... and that abussive AI makes u buy them for 3+ millions,,, when supposedly u are a renowned managaer and can buy player cheaper.

I offer 20 if it's 15, 5 more the price only for a big player to make it look more realistic.
Really? Tell me one manager in real life that gets players cheaper because he is well thought of! I can see why Real let Vicente Del Bosque go...cause he wasn`t good enough to get Beckham for 10 mio... No seriously man the better you are the more you will pay for players...just imagine that 2 star players are big talents for the bright future of your club

I used bad terms here.. i mean..... a big team can get players some millions cheaper because they can force in some way smaller teams to let them go... thats what i mean. Im taking in consideration those stars as the prestige i have as a great team
BTW,, yeah i have good players who are not well known... some of them are Anthony Seric (from parma) and Antonio Bellavista (from an italian 2nd div team). That bellavista particularly... i bought him for a cheap ost in my first season... and right now he is one of my best playmakers.
Tomas rosicky from B.Dortmund right now is my best kicker with accuracy 100 and power 97. I trained him a lot because at the beggining it cost very low PPoints to train him. And he was very cheap too. He is my best playmaker.

Yeah... dont buy players over 10 millions..... they are not worth of it.
I bought Tomas rosicky for 2 mils, and he is doing a job as great as nedved can do (with some training of course). He have not the tackloing, stamina, of nedved... but his passes and dribbles are excellent. U just need to use ur knowledge and figure what is best for u.
Dont waste too much in a single plaer...... and use the money to add more depth to your squad with better overall players (if u are a low of course)
If u are a big team.. well just sell the players that u dont want and make some money for others.
