Hmmm, no qualification ties in europe, board want us to stave of relegation and dennis bergkamp negotiating terms from a free transfer???? sounds like another good season could be here.

However, seeing as i won the league, any player i attempt to buy keeps asking for 6-7k a week, my board limit is 4k and i am trying to keep a max limit of 3k a week in respect of gate receipts etc.

I might make this into a story if anyone would be interested in it.

ok, a story it is then, i'll have the first posting up soon, got to go back over the last few weeks to the start of the season.

If anyone has any ideas of things they would like to see, to make this story better, please add your suggestions.

Season 04/05- European Football Returns to Kirkcaldy

Extracted from the Courier Newspaper 1/7/2004:

After the whirlwind that was last season, winning the premier league straight after coming
from the first division, with a weekly wage bill not exceeding £25k
a week, thats for 45 players too, this season would see Gary Parker's Raith Rovers return
to europe for only the second time in their history.
"Its a momentus achievement, obviously" he beamed "The league win was not down to individual
stars, but to a team that enjoyed football. We have to try and build on this, although,
with some of our players being loaned in for the season, Joe Murphy, Neil Mellor and Matthew
Spring, we will have to strengthen the squad slightly"

Of course, will all teams come characters, and none that have lit up a dressing room and
opitimised team spirit more than player coach Fernando Carlos Redondo, once of Real Madrid
and Milan. Fernando Carlos came to Kirkcaldy on a weeks trial initially, to boost his fitness
while searching for a club, little did he know, that club would be here.
"Its amazing here, the people, the players, the backroom staff, all have enthusiasm that i
have never seen before. The desire to do well, but at the same time, just play football
was what brought me here. The boss offered me a contract that would allow me to be a coach
and play was just right. I don't mind the pay cut i took, the experience was what attracted
me."

This season see's Raith Rovers in the Champions League, the first time in their history, can
they win it? the boss had his ideas on that.
"Its a competition like all others, league form goes out the window and it comes down to one
game at a time. Obviously there are favourites, Milan, Madrid, Barcelona and the other great
clubs, but each team is in this competition for a reason and we aim to do Scotland proud.

The champions league may also allow Raith to rekindle an old friendship with Bayern Munich, who
they played in their last European campaign, Bayern won 4-1 over two legs but the two clubs have
worked together on and off the field since, bayern even returned to open the clubs new stadium.
Coming from a town with a population of about 50,000 means the crowds that watch each week
are small in comparison with the opposition they will face, can the players cope with the
pressure of the Nou Camp or the San Siro?
"yes, why not? we have to play at Celtic Park and Ibrox twice a year anyway, so i don't see
why they can't draw from that experience"

Only two new faces have joined the players this season so far, Michael Gleeson, a youth from
southampton and his colleague Scott McDonald who made his loan move permanent after a glowing
campaign last time out.
This is an exciting time to be a supporter of Raith Rovers FC, long may it continue

It seemed clear to me the minute the new season started, the board suggested we stay clear of
relegation, which after winning the league, was a surprise but a good one too i suppose.
The pre season started well, everyone reported fit, and in expectation of qualification
rounds of europe, no friendlies were added.
Negotiations continued with players, coming in on trial for a week, being watched by coaches
in training and then deciding whether they could cut the mustard at this level.
All of this had to be done with a weekly total wage budget of £50k

RAITH FIGHT BACK IN CUP THRILLER

In their champions league debut, Raith Rovers fought back from 3-1 down to draw
3-3 in Belgium against Champions Anderlecht.

Raith started their debut match well, player coach Redondo putting them ahead
after 10 minutes with a surging run through the defence and a fine finish under
the goalkeeper.
All looked lost after that, with belerussian International Striker Maxim Tsigalko
equalising after Mark Kerr fed him through the middle. Anderlecht went 2-1 up on 42 mins
when Kutuzov crossed to the far post for Kolar to head back into Tsigalko's path
for an easy finish. Tsigalko earned the match ball with a fine third goal, and his
50th for the club when he volleyed home from 18 yards after again being set up
by scotsman Kerr.
Raith looked down and out, but, they kept their heads up and valiantly
fought back to earn a point. A miskick by Anderlecht keeper Chiotis led to
Joleon Lescott lofting the ball back into the area for Agustin Delgado to
climb high and head the ball in. 3-2
On 69 minutes, Raith were awarded a free kick 30 yards out from goal. Bergkamp
lined it up and swerved it masterfully into the top corner, raith had done it,
the bench went wild and the stadium quiet.
Raith were made to hold on in injury time when Mark Kerr got forward late on and rose
unchallenged for a header, only a fingertip save from keeper Steven James kept
the scores level.

Man Of the Match: maxim Tsigalko

After the match, Parker seemed to be in a buoyant mood.
"Its a great result against a very good team. We looked out of it at 3-1
but all credit to the lads, never let their heads drop for a minute and
we fought back for a good away point."
Fernando carlos Redondo agreed entirely and paid specific credit to the youngsters
of the team "the young lads did brilliantly tonight, Lescott, Lucas and Antonini
were all stars"

Raith Rovers

Youth Team
The day after, the plane landed at Edinburgh International and the coach returned us
to Kirkcaldy. The players had the day off and were to report in on friday morning
for training before the league match at Motherwell on the saturday. Training went
well, and one youth player was released for not making the grade. In his place came
two recommended youngsters, one, a striker from England named Lloyd Salmon and an
attacking midfielder from italy called Walter Tacconi

A few first teamers were rested for the trip to Motherwell after their midweek
excursions in the CL.
The team lined up as follows
James, Dyer, Carlsen, Lescott, Stubbs, Duran, Sinagra, Antonini, Cort, Jensen, Mac Donald.
subs: Delgado, Redondo, Bergkamp, Monk, Yates

The game kicked off well from Rovers point of view, lots of attacking pressure and
chances falling our way, but the form of Motherwell's loanee keeper Paul Robinson
kept the scores level as we went in at half time. The second half was to determine
Raith's outcome as Duran was red carded on 53 mins and Antonini followed on 72. Raith reshuffled
the formation and held out for a 0-0 draw.
Far from happy, I appealed against both cards as cautions would have been sufficient, but to no
avail. My players would be missing for a match each. We got on with training as normal come monday
morning, the concentration on the game midweek, our home CL debut against Zeljeznicar from Bosnia.
All the players were looking forward to the game. Redondo reporting that Sherjill Mac Donald was
becoming a good player for the club.
The game couldn't come quick enough, there was nothing to do after training for any of the coaching
staff, we waited, discussed tactics and attempts were made to have video of this club watched, but
they were hard to come by. We decided to keep the same formation as always and just rely on the
players ability to do the work.
The team lined up as
James, Lucas, Heinanen, Stubbs, Lescott, Redondo, Sinagra, Mauri, Delgado, Jensen, Bergkamp
subs: Cort, Mac Donald, Antonini, Duran, Yates, Monk, Dyer

Raith kicked off, and immediately, Bergkamp set off down the line with the ball, cut inside,
and unleashed a long range drive which was deflected by Besic who knocked it past the keeper
into his own goal. 3 mins, 1-0 Raith. The majority of the 8036 watching were on their feet
a great start. Steven James in goal never looked seriously troubled as the back four of Raith
kept the Bosnians under wraps well. the wingbacks running down the lines at all opportunities
to give crosses to Delgado who was causing havoc with the defence.
It wasn't until 43 minutes until Mauri swung in a corner and Delgado rose unchallenged to head
in the second goal. 2-0. It stayed that way for the rest of the game, with Raith bringing Dyer and
Mac Donald on for Lucas and Jensen respectively. A good win, 4 points from the first 6 and two
games against Milan to come.

Again, after the elation of Europe, it was back to league business on the saturday, this time away
to Hearts. Rovers made 2 changes from the line up from the CL, bringing in Cort and Amor for
Delgado and Redondo. The game ending 3-1 with two from Sinagra and one from Cort with Alan Maybury
responding for Hearts.
Raith were top of the league with 18 points, the same as Livingston.

RAITH INVOLVED IN 9 GOAL THRILLER
taken from the Courier Newspaper 29/09/2004

Raith Rovers played the third game in their Champions League campaign last night in the San Siro
Stadium in Milan against Italian Champions AC.
Raith had gone into this one with no one really expecting anything other than an experience on how to
deal with setbacks.
The game was watched by 71,000 supporters at the game and live on tv for the rest of scotland and most of
this crowd would have been on their feet in the 21st minute of the game as Daniel Jensen was fouled in the
air by Kakhaber Kaladze for a penalty. Stefano Mauri stepped up and sent the keeper the wrong way
to make it 1-0. A dream start, one which was not expected by many, not even the die-hards amongst us all.
What was to come next was even more surprising but in no means less enjoyable if you were of a blue
and white disposition. A poor Martin Laursen clearance fell to Agustin Delgado who laid the ball
off to Dennis Bergkamp who advanced into the area and struck the ball past Abbiati for 2-0. The deficit was
cut within 6 minutes as Miroslav Klose tapped in a rebound from his initial effort. The euphoria from this goal
lasted seven minutes as Dennis Bergkamp made it 3 for Raith with a wonderfully well placed shot. 3-1 Raith.
The fifth goal was scored on 42 minutes, again, Klose the scorer with a header. The teams in at half time, with
Raith silencing the large partizan crowd from Milan. The small band of Kirkcaldy travellers in the corner
could be heard all through the 15 minute empass before the players resumed for the second half.
The scores stayed level for 17 minutes as raith with held round after round of Milan pressure
and bombardment on the goal. Redondo swung in the cross from a rebounded corner for Agustin Delgado to rise
and nod in the 4th goal. Raith were looking to slay the giants of european football in their own
back yard, but on 78 minutes, the nerves began to show, Shevchenko scored with a wonderful header
to cut the deficit and set up a fantastic last 10 minutes for the neutral supporter, or sheer hell
for the rovers fans. All seemed lost and the travelling support went quiet as the San Siro erupted again
on 83 minutes as Ambrosini sneaked in on the blind side of the defence to level the scores at 4-4.
Could Raith hang on for the draw? would Milan grab a winner?
Parker emerged on the touchline to try and get the players heads up again, a defeat would not
be the end of the world for Raith in Europe and a draw would have left them in a good position for
the remaining 3 games.
The game was headed for a finish when Bergkamp advanced forwards and passed the ball across the
park for Jensen, however, Mauri stepped in and fooled the defence and was clear on goal. His low shot
silenced the crowd, even the Rovers fans as they stared in disbelief as Mauri was one on one with the
keeper. The shot slid under Abbiati and into the net. Euphoria, again. The away bench spilled onto
the pitch, the players all mobbed Mauri on the ground and Abbiati was a
broken man in the penalty box. Raith Rovers were one minute from a famous and undoubtably unforgettable
victory.
Milan only had time to kick off and fire the ball out of play before the final whistle brought
the best game in the 104 year history of Raith Rovers to an end. A great night of football, a big
party and probably the best hangover in the world the morning after.

AC Milan player of the match Shevchenko was full of praise for Raith but felt that a draw would have
been a fair result.
