Hey man, hope I can get a little help.

I've followed your instructions exactly - found the texture in data3.big, export to game folder, opened .rx3 in texture editor, imported my texture, then opened data3.big again, and activated .big. However, my edits to the texture don't stay. They just revert back to how they were.

Am I missing something?

amazing once again, master-K. one small correction, though, maybe you should use Gradient Map for reflection creation, with pink and white colours. and the reflection image should be pink-er for leather boots and white-r for synthetic ones.. hope my post helped ;)
