John O'Shea and Wes Brown

I've never been a fan of Blanc's and I do not understand why O'Shea and Brown don't start over him virtually all of the time. They need to build for the future. They've got quite a young core of future great defenders in Ferdinand, Brown, and O'Shea.

For me, O'Shea has been impressive, especially in Europe.

O'Shea has actually looked quite poor in central defence in recent weeks, but has looked very good at left back when Silvestre moved to the middle. The young Irishman was brutally exposed against Basle at centre-half.

Guess I haven't seen him play in a couple weeks.

He did look better at left back.

Oh, I dunno, he's looked so impressive at left back in recent weeks, I think he's beginning to settle there.

He is certainly big enough to play in central defence, though, although he was struggling against Basle. Probably just out of practice there.

btw, talking about man u young defender
i remember john curtis looked very promising during the 97-98 season, i thought he was going to challenge gary for the right back position, but then.......he disappeared and was sold to blackburn

just hope o'shea wouldn't be the same case!

John Curtis never got the same break into the team as John O'Shea. Curtis was only ever playing because of severe injury problems or Worthless Cup matches.

O'Shea played at left back again for Man Utd against Depor and looked class. That might be his future.

as far as i know, o'shea is a central defender originally

and since silvestre joined united, he has been playing the left back, but recently he moved to the central defender

i want to know, is that because ferguson wants to tie up silvestre's contract, so that he moves silvestre to central?

Maybe Sir AF wanted to see how good Silvestre was in the centre of the defence, as he kept saying he rather play there.

But when Rio comes back into the team, I think it will be back to left back for the French international.

Blanc, I'm afraid, is past his best. While he's still a decent enough defender, he is way past his sell-by date and should really retire at the end of this season.

This is actually his last season mate.

He said he wants to, the only thing left now is for him to discuss salary figures with the club I guess.

but blanc is influencial

all the young defenders can learn from him and that's important

remember how scholes learnt from cantona?

Yes, O'Shea did start as a central defender, so did John Curtis.

Silvestre was a left back at Inter before United bought him and continued to be one. In the game against Basle, United were short of central defenders and when O'Shea was brutally exposed there, Silvestre was brought inside to bring some experience and more pace to the centre of defence. He played an ABSOLUTE BLINDER. Therefore now he is almost a certainty at the centre of defence.
