Jaap Stam retires from professional football

I already posted this at the Ajax thread, but I felt the whole forum had to know that one of Holland's best defenders ever, Jaap Stam, has decided to stop playing professional football today.

He played for big clubs like Manchester United and AC Milan and won alot of prices including the CL with Manchester United in 1999 and missed out on a second with Milan on penalty kicks in 2005. He went to play his final seasons in Holland at Ajax, where at first he was going to stop at the end of this season, but he has decided to stop earlier due to a lack of motivation. He was one of our key players last season and this season aswell who often kept Ajax in the game with his inch perfect slidings and his leadership beeing the captain, which brought us as close as one goal to the league title and won the national cup. We will miss him deeply.

As he announced his retirement today, the journalists present gave him a standing ovation at the press conference, which shows how much respect he has earned from all over the country and all over the world aswell I think.

Jaap Stam, the rock.

Too bad :(

I liked him very much, he was, and he still is a fantastic defender, it's a shame he retires but, everyone has to stop once..

Sad for this great player to retire this way (N)

He does let Ajax down though. If he would've decided this in august, they'd still been able to buy a replacement. Not that I mind.

Legendary Badass! The first guy I ever saw getting stiched-up cold-blooded on the sideline without even blinking!

And what a defender! Sad to see him end his carrer!

All the best to him!

A true Gladiator. A defender who showed how, though football is a game, it is also a professional's job. Never saw him bend or bulge bedause of a foul... May his actions teach future palyers some good values.

I'm still having a hard time believing it Jaap quits football :( my heart is sad for him and for Ajax of course what a loss for football in general.
He was our rock in the back, the one you could always depend on and no matter what if he was able to play he DID.
No it's not true what I read a few posts back, if Ajax were in the CL he would've still quit because according to his own words yesterday he was planning to stop last summer. Martin van Geel talked him out of it.
Thanks for everything Jaap you were the best defender a true legend, our captain and feared leader, when Jaap had the ball, players stepped aside for him and cleared a path as funny as that may sound (Y)
