Is the U.S Media scared of soccer

Ever wondered why espn rather show Poker, fishing and worlds strongest men instead of a good european soccer match? Ever wondered why the only time you see soccer on the news is when something bad happens like fan violence or if something they think is funny to laugh about? Ever wonder why those cool nike freestyle soccer commercials never come on TV but yet they show the basketball ones? And whenever you do see some soccer highlights on TV they only show 1 goal even if the scoreline was 298,389,393 to 8,3298,893 lol but seriously, Ever wonder why epsn who used to show 2 champions league game a week now cut it back to 1 game a week, Oh and seeing them giving freddy adu all this hype but i bet they cant wait to bring the kid down and american soccer with him if he doesnt shine, Why is there that much hatred towards the worlds greatest sport in such a great country? Why do people think soccer is a wussy sport and thinking helmets and pads means your tough? Why did NBC cut olympic soccer games during the 2000 olympics every 5minutes to show commercials? What the hell is a soccer mom:confused: ? Why do commercials about sports product dont show soccer? Why on sports center top 10 play when they do show 1 soccer play in the countdown do they have to follow it up with stupid funny remarks? Do you think the media is afraid to show the public what the sport really is about and what it means the billions of people around the world, Are they scared that if they start showing top quality european leagues they would lose ratings a few years from now in baseball, basketball? Or do you just think they just dont care about the sport to show it on TV?

Because for example when i first came to the usa i had a older cousin that knew Carlos*sh!t about soccer, he never watched it on TV thought it was boring, One day we were chilling at my house and there was no soccer on TV but because of all the soccer stuff on my computer i showed him a few goals and tricks i downloaded and he couldnt believe how cool the sport was, i showed him everything even different sites of ultra groups and pics of fans fighting and rioting. Eventhough he was confused to why they took the game so seriously, and i had to try and explain to him it was more than just a game. Now he loves the game and whenever he comes over my house he asked me to show him more freestyle tricks and goals i download online, he is a die hard basketball fan but just because of me showing him what the sport was really about, he understand and now respect the game very much. And i guess in a way if the media showed soccer like that on TV and i mean everything about to sport the history, the fans, the players, the good, and the bad side, then people would take notice and one day this country will love the sport for what it really stands for. Sorry i just felt like writting this eventhough some may think its stupid.:(

The media there is like many of the people. They dont like what they dont know, and they dont like anything they cant win at.

Its funny to hear them talk about the NFL as the biggest sport, when they know football is bigger everywhere else. Listen to ESPN radio and you just laugh sometimes. And they disrespect any sports other than baseball, basketball and funny-shaped ball (NFL) :p

Very well written, I mainly think that the media here is so caught up in the sports that they think is important they don't give one of the best sport a chance. I'm a very big soccer fan but I also love Basketball, and Football but all ESPN wants to shove down our throats is ******* Baseball, I really tnought that after the World Cup here and MLS soccer now being here for 9 years that the sport would be taking serious but its not but I will always be a true soccer fan.

Baseball is mad boring. Seriously it takes like 5 hours for just one match to roll by. Action in football?? yea it stops like every minute for another 10 min before the play starts again. Basketball is probably the best sport in the US.

but they score so much in basketball after a while it gets boring, i dont know if anyone else fells this way but when your scoring 100 points a game something is wrong:D and its funny hearing the fans chant DEFENCE when i cant see any haha. If i watched 50 basketball games this season and see a couple thousand shots and dunks i would be set for the rest of my life because i wouldnt see anything new or good in the coming years. Anyways i love street basketball though and all the tricks, thanks to my cousin:rockman: :rockman:

If ESPN wanted to make more money, they should show more soccer games, even if it's like one a week showing the best game from one of the top european leagues.

I don't watch basketball either. But it's better than all the other sports. Of course football, futbol, fussball is the best sport on earth.:rockman: :rockman:

I think it has to do with soccer not being an "American sport". When you look at basketball, baseball and football they are all referred to American sports. And with Americans not being open minded or anything they tend to shut out whatever isn't American. It's the same as hockey. Americans see it as a "violent" sport but if it was an American sport they wouldn't say that. Also soccer isn't an advertisement friendly sport. The American tv stations depend on ad revenue for their channel but since soccer is nonstop in 2 45 min halves, there is no room for ads. So this means less money.

you are so right, an easy example is tennis, when serena williams was injured you didn't hear Carlos **** about women's tennis on sportscenter nothing but now that she has recovered and is winning in this tournament she was all over sportscenter today not only the game but some other stuff about the olympics i mean come on. if the usa would win the world cup in the usa i think that would be the only way that soccer would be taken seriously, not in germany or korea but in the usa because the media here dont really care what happens in sports abroad.

great post (Y). anyway bigp is right-if it ain't American then they probably won't pay much attention to it. but really, i don't care how you justify it-watching soccer is waaaaaayyyyyyyy better than poker or fishing:| :| i get ESPN here in N.Z and there's like 3-4 repeats of Sportcenter a day, while the only good league they show is La Liga:kader:

That is exactly how I see it. Look at all the American sports, there are always breaks for commercials (TV timeouts) and so on. Like you said, in soccer you've got two-45 minutes halves that are un-interrupted and channels will most likely not want to risk the loss of money from not having commercials. That's one reason why I doubt soccer will be very succesful here. They wouldn't generate as much money as the other sports when it comes to commercial revenue. Its all about the $$$$ in the end. :kader: One thing that sucks about living here in the States is that you can't have a really good discussion about soccer because no one gives a damn. The only people I can do that with are my family and here on the forums. :| That's pretty pathetic. :D
