Somebody posed this question to me today after his performance yesterday and thruoughout the Spanish Season and his overall consistency, is Lionel Messi on his way to becoming the greatest, to be compared with the like of Pele, Maradona, Van Basten, Di Stefano, Beckembauer....etc....??

your opinion...

Well, our generation (actually the 90's and 2000's) have produced, a number of good players, Zidane and Maybe Ronaldo in my opinion being the best of the bunch, but few have captured the world the way Pele, Maradona, Cruyff etc did, you know, usually because the longer seasons wear them out much more than in the past, and also because by the time the World Cup rolls around a lot of them are just too tired to give the tournament its proper go....I think becasue of the pace of his career, Messi Could suffer that fate ...notice I said could......because the kid is awesome and young, when he touches the ball is like you know something special is about to happen every time

Well, this comparisons don't usually end well, it's true that him, and many players before him had a fantastic potential, and many people believed they could become the new legends of football, thing is that after some years they make people lost their enthusiasm about them, probably because we talk to much about this particular issue, and that may cause negative effects like pressure or creating an high ego on the players.

He has almost everything to be a legend, let's see if he has the mental structure required to be it.

PS: Players nowadays can't stand out so much, because there are much more professional clubs, and the quality is much more distributed, so that may also be a reason not to see a new Pelé, Eusébio or Maradona.

It's kind of hard to judge whether Ronaldo/Zidane had the same impact as Pele because Pele was around 40 years ago, give them some years, and then we'll see who people remember. But no, I don't think Messi will have a much larger impact on the football world than the one he currently has.

I think Zidane has been the best player of the "new generation". Riquelme is probably the best and most creative football player now (in my opinion only of course)...maybe I'm biased because I'm an Argentina fan(atic).

Messi is still very young, and he certainly has a potential to become a legend. But it's the world cup where the biggest legends are made of.

A legend like Pele or Cruijff will never play anymore. Simply because the media coverage is too big. All this information makes it difficult to create a legend around a player. Messi might well be as good as some of those legends, but we simply see so much of him, we know he also plays a bunch of bad matches.

that is very very true...

And like somebody else said, the all -stars of today's game seldom play welll in the world cup they are too tired.....

Yes Messi is next. He has the technical brilliance of Ronaldinho (maybe a step down, but it's close), but he has a feel for the game that I have never seen from a player in my life. He was born to play this game. Dinho is a great player, but he is foremost about individual skills, Messi understands the game, he is foremost a soccer player.

each player has diffrent qualities, maradonna could drible and had a lot of skill, pele was all about scoring goals and great goals and was a bit of a play maker but not in the molde of say zidane or requilme, messi i someone who i think a winger but cuts inside and gets involved in the play he hasnt got the skill of dinho or maradonna, but his controllof the ball is out of this world and no one can driblle like him, its as if the ball is glued to his foot.

personally i think zidane is the greates ever footballer, people will start questioning me, but its my personnal opinion.

I think the main difference between Messi and Maradona is that Maradona was much more a playmaker... he played Riquelme's role. If you take a comparison to the Maradona-era Argentina teams Messi plays in Jorge Burruchaga's position.

Of course back then in Bilardo/Maradona days Argentina used only one pure forward. Now Argentina's system is much more offensive.

well at least you know that is a questionable thought respectable opinion.....The question was not wether Messi would be good or not, or even remembered, I think we all agree this kid is nasty inside a football field....the question my friend asked me was aimed at finding out if Messi will ever be a LEGEND...yes like Pele, Maradona, etc...and other, I think the only way he can solidify himself as a legend is if:

He maintains some level of consistency throuhout his career, including international competitions,

If he can lead Barca (or whatever other team he plays in) to a European Championship.....or two....

If he can lead Argentina to a world cup trophy, then he most definetly will be a legend, Argentina hastn won anything serious since 1993 Copa America, that's a long time for a team and a country with that much talent

messi is definitely up there, the kid is only ******* 20, he's doing stuff that not even the likes of your ronaldo's or rooneys do too often, on a regular basis

he will be world player of the year this year or next no doubt, its hard to judge against players of another day though, its too different, things change over time, and obviously there are certain grudges and biases that will always sway certain people, but for me i will always remember messi
