Is football too commercialized?

I think football is why too commercialized. It just makes me sick to look at a game and see that the players are walking ad boards, the stadium is filled with logos and avertisements everywhere you look. The stadium names used to always be real name, such as Elland Road, nowadays many of them are just the names of companies, or what's almost as bad is when the most original thing they can come up with is the team name for the stadiums name, such as Auf Schalke Arena, etc. Even the leagues have corporate names, such as the Bank of Scotland League and the Coca-Cola Division One or whatever. It is ridiculous! Why can't it just be Scottish Premier League and Division One?

Because that way it wouldn't make any money. And nobody will invest in a football league or team if there is no money to be made.

You can't expand a product without financial security. Money and advertisement are what makes a product go round. And without those elements, you've got nothing.

So you really think that football would be where it is right now if it were not for these multi million dollar generating ads everywhere?

If it weren't commercialized, you would never see a game on TV. Chances are your local team would be so poor it would have to fold and would cease to exist.

Seriously, adboards surrounding the pitch and ads all over the jerseys is a small price to pay for the high quality of pitches and stadia, and the amount of superstars and quality teams that exist and we are fortunate enough to be able to watch on TV.

It doesn't really matter. Nobody says "Bank of Scotland Scottish Premier League" when refering to the Scottish Premier League in normal conversation, most people just say "SPL". Same with other leagues.

This is a big issue in other sports in America as well. I think puting logos of companies on uniforms is going too far. I am not saying you can all of a sudden change that now. If you do take revenue away from clubs in this fashion it would hurt many. But this is not to be blamed on commercialism in the form of ads but capitalism entering the realm of sport. Sports are popular so TV and Ads are attracted to it naturally, the dependance wasn't necessarily the other way around in the old days. The drive of club leaders to make profits off of the sport is what made advertising creep in, wages and transfer fees rise, and turned sports into a business. let's not kid ourselves these aren't "clubs" anymore. They are large businesses with many employees, CEOs, and stocks/shares. It's a shame in some ways but that is the way things are and there isn't that much to be done about it. I think that the really large, rich clubs could get rid of the kit-adverts (which seems to be the focal point of the argument), and that would be terrific from a traditional standpoint, but because of the sad state of financial affairs in the sporting world, commercialism is now fully entwined with it.

society is too commercialized so why should sports, especially popular ones, not accept the money being thrown their way?

Actually, my favorite team plays in England, I don't get to watch them anyway.

That league would make so much revenue in TV deals and ticket sales it wouldn't need sponsorship.

Look, in the US we don't have big logos on our jerseys, we don't call it the Coca Cola Major League Baseball. And look. The leagues are extremely healthy. The salaries are extremely high, too. If we can do it, Europe should be able to too. So what if player wages go down too much? They're all way overpaid anyway.

MLB and NFL all have numerous sponsership deals. Same with each team. That is why you see stuff like Tampax the offical tampon of the NFL. Just because their aren't coperate logos on thier jersey doesn't mean American sports league are not commericalized.

It seems like the real problem you have is ads on soccer jerseys. I think they are a great thing. Not only do the teams get paid extra money but they are supporting a bussiness that has ties in their area. So they are promoting local bussiness even if the sponsering company is a major powerhouse.

I would rather have logoed jerseys, fields, and ad boards than the US model of developing sports that include a 5 minute commercial break every 10-15 minutes of Gameplay.

There are no free lunches!
