Has anyone got one of these? I'm thinking of getting one but am not sure.

I want one with a radio and a fairly big memory. Does it have a shuffle feature??

would you recommend this?

Its a really good mp3 player, had one since October, but appears it is no longer supported by iRiver- its been replaced by the colour screened H3** series.

Better sound quality, battery life and features than an iPod. The recording function from the internal mic, supplied external mic or line/optical in has saved me a hell of a lot of note taking at 6th form.

I use the filetree mode so all the files are organised how I want them. There is also a 'database' mode similar to iPod navigation but it means using the bundled software which is apparantly not too great. I havent even installed the bundled software, with XP you can just drag and drop files on to it as it shows as a USB harddrive when connected, meaning you can transfer other data on it as well as music.

The controls arent as bad as a few reviews I saw before buying were: When set to filetree mode clicking the 'joystick' opens the menu, right or a click opens file/folder, left is up a level and up and down scroll items. There are a few other buttons as well (A-B, rec, play/on, stop/off) but just for playing music you can ignore these. The manual explains all the functions of the player and its buttons (input/output [line in/out, optical in/out] shuffle, record, radio, equaliser settings etc) but it is best to have a flick through it and then just play around.

The remote is possibly the best feature, because of the setup of controls on it and the LCD you can do everything (I mean everything aswell!) using the remote meaning the main unit can stay in your pocket.

The only issue with the remote is it somehow manages to produce a clicking sound in the background when it is connected, this is only noticable at really low volume though as the click is not affected by the volume setting. The only time I ever notice it is in between tracks when I am in an otherwise totally silent room when I am listening at low volume, even when walking down quiet streets you cannot hear it, so it is not a massive issue some have made it out to be.

Only other issue some might have with it is it wont play tracks from iTunes as it does not support the format, and won't play DRM restricted WMA/MP3 files, so if you have bought lots of tracks online you will not be able to play them. All my music is ripped from CD via Windows Media Player 10 direct to the player (although it does not show up as a device to sync it with, I have set the directory to rip to as E:\music so as long as the player is connected before I open WMP it rips straight to it).

Battery life is officially at 16 hours which is about right. The internal battery will last a lot longer than the well known short lifespan of the iPod battery and is alot cheaper to replace if you do wear it out.

For more info and opinion go to the H1*0 series forum at MisticRiver, I'm not a member but regularly read the site and forums and spent about a month before i bought mine just reading the forums to make sure i was buying the right player.

I can post some pictures if you want if there is anything you want to see in detail.

£205.88 i think (how sad am I for remembering the exact price!) but that was with next day delivery from amazon.co.uk.

Where are you thinking of getting yours from? Hopefully not advancedmp3players.co.uk- they messed me about A LOT when I was trying to get a H120 or H140. Lots of emails back and forth without getting anywhere. They promised me a deadline that they would have some stock in by, but went over it then gave me a new date and went over that. At one point promised to put one aside for me when the got stock but then decided when the shipment came in the had already sold out on people pre-ordering while they were out of stock. Wasn't impressed.

Amazon was cheaper than them I just wanted to order from somewhere who offered a specialised support number as iRivers isn't that great. Although having said that if there is a problem iRiver are appartently really good about replacements, even if you are out of warranty or did something not covered by warranty.

not from advancedmp3players.co.uk, I always thought their prices were a bit expensive, compared to other places.

I was thinking of getting it from here but I need to go into the store, which i will do soon, hopefully (Y)

It's crap, get an iPod

I wondered how long it would take.

Why is it crap? What makes an iPod better? Marketing and a clickwheel isn't everything you know.

The 3 reasons I bought an iRiver were for drag and drop file transfer with XP as I use it at home and school, the remote, and the recording options; 3 things I wanted and the iPod doesn't have.

Don't get me wrong the iPod is a good player- I have spent quite a while listening to and playing with several of my friends iPods, but to be honest they are not that amazing, especially if you don't like the clickwheel or use iTunes, both of which applied to me.

They are no more simple to use than the iRiver for playing music anyway, I've seen too many people ask to have a look at someones iPod and then not be able to turn it on, access the menu or select tracks because it isnt obvious enough for them, clicking the joystick then moving up and down is just as easy as using the clickwheel.

BOSTON, Massachusetts (AP) -- A Web site that disclosed Apple's top-secret plans to bring out a $499 mini computer and a new bare-bones iPod -- prompting a lawsuit from the company -- turns out to be the brainchild of a 19-year-old Harvard University student.

Nicholas M. Ciarelli, who says he had been "an enthusiastic fan" of Apple for years, said Friday hopes to find free or low-cost legal help to defend the suit, arguing that he deserves First Amendment protection.

At the company's annual MacWorld conference Tuesday in San Francisco, Apple Computer Inc. chief executive Steve Jobs introduced a cut-rate computer the size of a paperback and a tiny iPod music player that starts at $99.

Citing "highly reliable sources," Ciarelli's Web site, www.thinksecret.com, had reported December 28 that the company would be bringing out a $499 Mac mini computer. On January 6, it predicted the $99 iPod, though it got some details wrong.

Ciarelli's identity as the site's editor and publisher was revealed on Wednesday in The Harvard Crimson, the student newspaper.

Apple sued Think Secret on January 4, contending the Web site violated trade secrets. Besides the site, it named as defendants unidentified sources who tipped off the online publication about the launch.

Think Secret "solicited information about unreleased Apple products from these individuals, who violated their confidentiality agreements with Apple by providing details that were later posted on the Internet," said Apple in a statement.

But Ciarelli said his articles were protected by the First Amendment and that information was gathered using proper newsgathering techniques.

"A lot of lawyers are interested in my case, but few are able to do it for free or low cost," Ciarelli, of Cazenovia, New York, said in an e-mail interview. "I'm seeking representation."

Ciarelli has been editing and publishing the site under the pen name "Nick dePlume" since age 13. The site, which accepts advertising, is popular with enthusiasts of the company's products and industry analysts.

Apple declined to answer questions Friday about whether it would now sue Ciarelli himself.
