Ireland vs. Switzerland [P] & [R]

Internazionale

Elo Ratings
Crucial match by 2 teams. :) Should be a great match, following France will likely to win the last match easily against Cyprus.

My prediction: Ireland 1 - 0 Switzerland

Ireland are gonna be without Duffer, so I dont know what Kerr is going to do to generate some creativity. Robbie Keane is gonna have to take the bull by the horns, and hopefully they get a result

Given is fit again, though, and is confirmed to be facing them. Big boost there (Y)

Irish set for Keane rallying cry

Roy Keane could make an emotional plea to the Republic of Ireland team ahead of the must-win match with Switzerland, boss Brian Kerr has hinted.

Keane misses the World Cup qualifier in Dublin with injury, but Kerr is hoping he will be present in the dressing room to give the players a crucial lift.

"I spoke to Roy. He just rang me up and we had a chat," said Kerr.

"I won't go into any details. But I've left it up to him as to whether he comes to the game on Wednesday or not."

The Irish will hope the presence of captain Keane giving a team talk ahead of Wednesday's game against the Group Four challengers could make all the difference to the result.

If the Irish can win at Lansdowne Road they will be guaranteed at least a place in the play-offs for next year's World Cup in Germany.

Under-pressure Kerr was a far more relaxed and positive figure during training after his side's 1-0 win over Cyprus kept the Republic's World Cup hopes alive.

"There's no need for us to try and go out and win the game in the first 10 to 15 minutes," he said of the Switzerland match.

"But for every game in this group we've approached it by saying `let's go and win it, let's have a go'."

I know Ive given him crap before about his overly aggressive style of play, but by fvck if he isnt a godly leader. Id love to overhear that pregame talk, if he actually gets to deliver it to them

never knew you were a tattie muncher balla, i can see the swiss stealin this one 2-1.
Though I have lived there for spells in the past, I dont actually live there now, but I still dickride the ROI nt as is. However still unlike most yanks who call themselves irish, my mother was born and raised in Lurgan, up north, and the majority of her family lives either there or in Lough just south of the border. In any event, I get to visiting them for long spells, so I feel more culturally Irish than most people here who claim that lineage. I do love my tatties too (H)

Its 0-0 now in the 51st :( Cmon boys, ya gotta find it

He said it right there. Its over at 0-0 which is a bitter result when you consider that Keane was pulled with a half hour to go leaving Clinton Morrison :| as the only true foward.

Well, anyway, Ireland deserved this. They shot themselves in the foot when they then gave up an equalizer to Israel in the 90th. In a division like this, those two points were as good as gold.

Sad afternote: apparrently all the players save Given (who stood alone to salute them (Y)) walked off the pitch without applauding their fans in what was a cold Lansdowne night :nape: If only Keano and Duffer were there...

Israel will feel hard done to not make it. Wanted to see Ireland make it, but playing Morrison as a lone striker is useless.

Keane jr was up there for about an hour. Then, nothing

Some of the people on big soccer were losing their minds about Kerr being fired, but I honestly cant fault him too much for not making given that they won or drew virtually all the games they should have. In theorey they had no chance to win this group, yet thanks to France's indolence it was there. Yet just when the group was ripe for the taking the most inspirational player is out, and the most talented one is out. Hard luck, but I guess now everyone can see how much of an inspired performance they turned out in Korea when they cant even make the finals here. Ah well
