Iraqi shot dead attempting goal

BAGHDAD -- Police say an Iraqi soccer player has been shot dead just as he was about to kick what could have been the tying goal in a weekend game south of Baghdad.

Police Maj. Muthanna Khalid says a striker from the Buhairat amateur team was facing only the goalie during a Sunday match in Hillah when a supporter of the rival Sinjar club shot him in the head in the final minute of play.

Sinjar was leading 1-0 when the shooting occurred. Khalid said a spectator was arrested.

More Iraqis are turning out for sports events now that security is improving. Major matches in Baghdad are heavily guarded but security in amateur games in smaller cities is often lax.

It's kind of like Uzbekistan. Pakhtakor and Bunyodkor are rivals, a Pakhtakor player leveled the match and found himself threatened with a gun. Thankfully he wasn't killed.

I've heard about the same story, but it was different from "my source". It was a GK who got killed when celebrating a goal, accordingly supporters were shooting in the air as a celebration but the GK were hit and then died. Regardless of how it happened, it's still so tragical.

... but really, how callous do you have to be to see a player approaching goal and you pull a gun, take careful aim at his head, and fire? I'd like to hear what Anmesty International would say to his death penalty. I've seen my fair share of football violence in amateur games (ranging from fisticuffs to a few stones being flung) but this is just ridiculous.

Shocking! How did that happen at amateur leagues? I mean do they really have that fanatic fans?
I remember a player was killed (after the game) cause he missed a penalty. That was really shocking! If I remember well he was argentinian.

oh yes yes i remember!!
well infact guys, in a local match here in uganda,
we had been to see it at the catakula stadium.
after the game, outside, these hooligans,just because their team lost, were throwing pieces of chicken lollipop on people from their cars. my wife is vegetarian, they threw a chicken lollipop on her , and she ended up puking so badly and got terrorised. she couldnt eat for 3 days.
those guys were sick
so in short, every ccountry has as et of hooligans who makes matters worse. they cannot accept defeat in a sporting way. ihave no clue why.

I just read on wiki. Andres Escobar was his name. And they say he was killed cuz of an own-goal.
The killer was paroled in 2005...
