Iran suspended from International football

FIFA's in the right on this one. They've stated many time that FA's should be autonomous from the national government.

Kenya and Greece have both been suspended in the past for similar things. So it's not unprecedented.

My guess is that Iran blames this on 1) Israel, 2) America, or 3) the EU and claims a zionist conspiracy against them instead of taking responsibility for pissing on the lid.

In the prevalent political situation this decision will only set Iran against the world even more.

I think the Iranians have been asking for this for a while now, the government has always been interfering in all football matters, like how they forced all their players to have their hair cut or they won't get to play, because they needed to comply with 'the moral & ethical values of the state'. After their poor showing in the world cup they sacked the president of their FA, but he refused to leave and FIFA intervened and gave Iran a deadline to reinstate his position, but the guy decided to resign a few weeks later, but FIFA weren't satisfied saying the government pressured him to do so. Iran also denied a visa to the South Korean assistant coach who happens to be an Iranian national, the Koreans complained saying the Iranians were trying to get an unfair advantage.

Having said that, the Iranians aren't the only ones in Asia who are guilty of doing stuff like this. The sheikhs of oil-rich Gulf countries like Kuwait and Saudi Arabia single handedly run their football federations and all football and sport affairs, same thing for several central Asian nations and other countries like North Korea. So I can't rule out any political motives behind this.

Iran will now miss out on the Asia games, but if they agree to carry out all the mentioned reforms they should have the ban lifted pretty soon. On the other hand if they start blaming zionists and Americans and refusing to take responsibility they will probably not be seeing any football for a long time to come.

This ain't good for the upcoming Asian Cup finals 2007 that will be held in South East Asian countries (Indonesia/Malaysia/Thailand/Vietnam)

I hope FIFA will lift the ban to participate them in the Asian Cup 2007.

It'll be lifted by then unless Iran really screw something up.

Asian Games are probably out of the question though.

Barely a week and the ban's already been lifted..

FIFA President Sepp Blatter told reporters at a soccer and business conference in Dubai that world soccer's governing body had received "alarming phone calls" from Iran over the past 24 hours.

"We have agreed with Iran a route that needs to be respected. We are going to give them until Dec 5 to do so," he said.

"The ban is provisionally lifted. The Iranian team can participate at the Asian Games."
I wonder if they threatened to nuke the FIFA HQ :fool:
