Internet Connection Help

Recently I have noticed a drastic decrease in my download/upload speeds. I have a connection of 2mb so should be getting around 150+kb/s download speed and have been until recently. Now I get 10-15kb/s I have tried all the usual methods like deleting cache, malware checks, registry cleaning and whatnot but still no increase in speed. When I connect to the internet Windows says I have connected at 2mb so I'm not really sure where the problem originates. I have also plugged the modem cable straight into the wall, on a friend's advice, but still no increase. Any help?

Do you use a router? If so, is it wireless and how old is it and how far away from your computer (same/different level of your house) is it? You may be caught in a dead spot.

It may be the Internet Service Provider's fault OR it COULD be that you need to upgrade your hardware..i.e. get the latest modem that your ISP offers/supports. However, this is NOT a guaranteed cure....there may be something ELSE wrong with your computer.

What's the speed of your CPU? Do you know your motherboard specifications? What are your system's specifications? RAM, Hard Drive size (free/empty space)?

The registry is a critical part of your system. Unless you are a professional, it should not be adjusted with. Read a lot of reviews of registry cleaning software and you will see the possible downsides and potentially disastrous consqeuences of changing your registry entries.

The registry was just something I was advised to clean so I'll remember that next time somebody tells me.

I just use a regular old modem to connect, and I was trying to find the latest drivers but they don't seem to exist.

My laptop has a 1.4 Mhz Pentium M processor with 256 MB RAM. My harddrive has 5GB left out of ~30GB. I don't think free space is a problem though as all my other programs run without any unnatural slowdown(including the browser itself).

I've asked around my area(connected to same exchange)and nobody seems to have the same problem as me. I hope I find out what the problem is as its so annoying seeing my downloads trickle along or my online games filled with lag.:nape:

Overall your laptop is quite old...what do you primarily use it for?

No you don't! Go to Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Information and scroll down to the line where it says Available Physical Memory. This line will be just below the line that says TOTAL Physical Memory, which will be 256.00 MB.

Seems a bit on the small side, but you'd probably know better...

I only use my laptop for the internet and occasionally an online game(Wolfenstein:Enemy Territory).

My actual physical memory is only 40MB. I'm not sure if this is normal but it sounds suspiciously low especially when I have all background tasks(apart from the "system tasks" that I'm not even sure if they should be there.

The hard-drive is fine right now but once it starts getting a little closer to the limit I will start cleaning it out.

Is the reduced upload/download speed only when you use P2P programs and not when you download from http links? If that is case then your ISP may have started using packet shaping to prevent rapeage of their bandwidth by torrent users.

I had to change from TalkTalk a while back because of this, the bunch of mongs.

Nah it's just regular HTTP downloading. The speed is ok for websites and pictures but when it comes to videos or downloading a file its just not bearable.

Thanks for all your help people, the problem seems to have gone away. I have no idea why or how but just as suddenly as it happened it's gone away now. So thanks for all your help!
