In memory of Munich

man united forever

Senior Squad
Today is the 45th anniversary of the Munich disaster, which claimed the lives of eight Busby Babes, including the likes of captain Roger Byrne, Tommy Taylor and the magnificent young player Duncan Edwards. They shall not be forgotten. May they rest in peace.

Flowers of Manchester

.One cold and bitter Thursday in Munich, Germany,

Eight great football stalwarts conceded victory,

Eight men will never play again, who met destruction there,

The Flowers of English football, the Flowers of Manchester.

.

Matt Busby's boys were flying, returning from Belgrade,

This great United family, all masters of their trade.

The pilot of this aircraft, the skipper Captian Thain,

Three times he tried to take off and twice turned back again.

.

The third time down the runway, disaster followed close,

There was slush upon that runway and the aircraft never rose.

It ploughed into the marshy ground, it broke, it overturned,

And eight of that team were killed when the blazing wreckage burned.

.

Roger Byrne and Tommy Taylor who were capped for England's side,

And Ireland's Billy Whelan and England's Geoff Bent died.

Mark Jones and Eddie Colman and David Pegg also,

They all lost their lives as it ploughed on through the snow.

.

Big Duncan, he went too, with an injury to his brain,

And Ireland's brave Carlos Blanchflower will never play again.

The great Matt Busby lay there, the father of this team,

Three long months passed by before he saw his team again.

.

The trainer, coach and secretary and a member of the crew,

Eight great sporting journalists who with United flew,

And one of them was Big Swifty who we will ne'er forget,

The finest English keeper that ever graced a net.

.

Oh England's finest football team it's record truly great,

It's proud successes mocked by a cruel turn of fate,

Eight men will never play again, who met destruction there,

The Flowers of English Football, the Flowers of Manchester.

That was one of the worst tragedies ever in the history of football. May their souls rest in peace.
Man Utd supporters will remember them today and always. Also the way the club has shown tremendous will power and courage to recover from such a grave tragedy touches me personally and it inspires me......
And I'm sure there are no daft Man City or Liverpool fans in this forum who wud mock about this.

I'm not a Man Utd fan, but that airplane crash really was a tragedy. Just imagine how good they could have been if Duncan Edwards and George Best had played together! :o

Go here for the unofficial site relating to the munich disaster:
www.munich58.co.uk

February 6th 1958.

The Busby Babes, I believe, would have challenged the great Real Madrid side of that era for European Cup domination. Who knows, if the tragedy hadn't have happened it may have been Man Utd who'd won 5 European Cups at that time, we'll never know.

The World Cup of '58 was Pele's World Cup, it's a shame that Duncan Edwards didn't get the chance to show his talent on this World Cup.
