IE and MSN not Connecting

when i try to use Internet Explorer or MSN they can't connect. IE tells me there is not current connection to the Internet (but there clearly is because i can access the 'net through Opera). MSN comes up with a useful error message: "Sorry, we were unable to sign you in to the .NET Messenger Service at this time. Please try again later. 80072efd 'Retry' 'Cancel' "

this problem has only happened recently, right after i installed the latest Windows Update. not sure if there is a connection though.

so wtf is going on and how to i fix it?

Check the usual suspects. If you have a firewall maybe its not letting ie & msn thru because the programs have changed.

wierd......but whats wierder is that there arent any new updates for win98. They stopped last year didnt they........

I had that problem too. I went to Tools -> Internet Options -> Connections -> LAN Settings and checked the box for "Automatically Detect Settings" and all was fine. :)

i went there and it was already checked so i unchecked the thing where it says something about a proxy server and now its working.
