How much do Brits know about American sports?

First off, let me state that this is STRICTLY OUT OF CURIOSITY, I'm not trying to start any fighting.

I'm guessing that the average American has probably only heard of Manchester United and Real Madrid :f***:, but how much does the average Brit know about baseball or American football. Certain teams, players? I'm just wondering.

I know nothing about American Football and American sports in general because of most of them are just extrememly boring as far as I'm concerned. I do know a few things about Basketball but other than that I don't know much.

I used to like American Football when I was a kid because Channel 4 used to show live matches quite a lot during the 1980's. I had a few teams' jerseys and books as well...

These days I don't follow the sport and I wouldn't know the teams locations or names now because they moved city so I dunno.

I'm not a Brit, but you could ask the same to other Europeans.

I don't care about Baseball, too boring. American football is okay, I'm enjoying the Super Bowl every year. The show with big music acts is great. I could name a handful names or teams, but I'm not that into it.

I love Basketball, I love the NBA! I know all of the 29 teams, my favourites are the Bulls and the Mavs. Favourite players: Dirk, Allen Iverson and KG.

But I hate the time zones, have to get up at 3 (+,-) am to watch the games. :(

Yeah, Galaxy would be MLS. Here you go remember these names:

NBA [Basketball] - Minnesota Timberwolves
MLB [Baseball] - Minnesota Twins
NFL [Football] - Buffalo Bills [Screw the Minnesota Vikings, never liked them. Dad is from Buffalo.]
NHL [Hockey] - Minnesota Wild

Baseball is great to play and watch and the same with Basketball.

My favourite NBA team:
Indiana Pacers, that is because Rik Smits (dutch) played there.

Everybody remember Philadelphia. Arguably the best sports town in America. All athletes who have played here have said that its the toughest town to play for because the fans eat you up if you dont perform.

Philadelphia Flyes!

So then why would you want to play for a team in Philly?

thats true, i remember this one time on UEFA Champions League Weekly this guy was walking around New York with a Beckham Man Utd jersey asking people if they knew who he was.

most people said either "I dont know" or "Hes that guy married to that Spice Girl".

Yeah that was quite a good movie :p

Anyway, can't say I know much about American sports (again, not a brit). Only seen a bit of Basketball after NZ did alright at the World Champs, but does it really count as an american sport? Baseball, only from 'Plays of the Week', we play softball down here. Gridiron, er...ooookaaaaay, er, nice body armour, but Rugby is the real deal. Ice hockey - I was under the impression it was more a canadian sport....

Rodeo looks like fun though! :D

Not a Brit, but I never really took to American sports in a big way. I watch the odd game now and then, but I don't really give a monkey's about the matches.

Shouldn't this topic be in the OTHER SPORTS forum.

I'm not sure Americans and Canadians will ONLY have heard of Man Utd or Real Madrid. My own club, Celtic are over there playing Man Utd and AC Milan in 3 weeks and the games were immediately sold out.

The problems football has in North America are that:

1. It's seen as very much a European game

2. It tends to be immigrant Europeans and South Americans who are into it.

3. Its actually the most played sport in the USA at school and college level but the jump to the professional game still isn't happening.

dont be such a goober about where this belongs. and yeah, seriously, the only club people really know of here is man u. if that. just because all those tickets sold out fast doesnt mean its popular here, the cities that are hosting games have high minority populations and from what ive seen, they make up much of the soccer fan base that have seats at those matches. soccer is not the most played hs and college sport. other sports have been introduced and soccer has been removed from hs/college athletics because of title 9.(equal sports for men and women). yeah its popular for youths and its growing but has a long way to go before its the most popular. probably never will be realistically. mny people are jumping to the pros, well mls, so semi-pros...dont worry about our lack of representation in europe, we will be representing in the next 10 years.

Soccer is a sport both men and women play tho...i don't see why it gets removed, that's confused me for awhile.
