How do you get non-strikers to score

Me too, I'm enjoying it.

I just thought I'd let you know that I played like 5 or 6 games tonight and scored about 6 or 7 goals with midfielders.

Seriously? How do you do it? I still don't think I've scored a goal with a non-striker in my career mode outside of open play. Did you do it using 4-4-2? If so, I would really like to know how you did it.

I'm using 4-4-2, my tactics are usually attacking with wing play or possession. What I do is this, I run through the middle (with the ball) with one of my midfielders or with 2 of them (passing back and forth along the way), then I'll pass out to the winger, and make the midfielder continue his run into the box. Then, he's there, along with the 2 strikers, and whoever else wanders up.

No real team plays football like this... Those gaps between mid, def and att are ridiculous and why don't the defenders stay near the opponents like in real football.

I've scored with midfielders but I don't play at the higher difficulty levels cause the frigging computer won't let me defend.

The most stupid thing I've ever seen in a footie game is that the computer prevents you from sprinting without the ball even though the computer does that. There isn't a bit of freedom in defending and that pretty much ruins the game...

I think Fifa 2004 sucked even more so they have done something right this year. But because in Fifa 2003 it was possible to run without ball it makes me think what kind of idiots are developing this game? Why don't they listen to what the fans like and what they don't and develope the game from there?

Is there even an official forum for FIFA games that the developers even bothered to read...

My guess is that if you were allowed to overrun the CPU everytime, it wouldn't be very challenging. CPU will never be smarter than humans, if they can't even outrun you I bet you'd have 80% possession every match.

I completely agree. I'm playing with Chelsea pro level and am 23 games into the season and have only socred one goal from non strikers. And that was Lapmard from a free kick.

how are you playing a season with chelsea, did you already play one with a shi**y team?

I have managed to score a winning goal with a middle fielder and that was because I had to change my strategy.

I've scored goals several times with midfielders and once or twice with a defender. Most of my goals come from the strikers though. I'm using a 4-4-2 formation with an attack/neutral mentality and wings strategy. So far I'd say the breakdown would be 80% strikers, 19% midfielders, and 1% defenders. I imagine this is because there seems to be such a gap in the midfield.

I have a question to Yellow n' Green. How did you figure out what the pitch size is in the game? It seems a bit out of spec but how in the world did you come up with actual numbers?

In the ini.big file, it gives the length and width of the pitch in 16ths of a foot.

The number is 6450. So divide by 16 and you get the length in feet, which is 403feet.
There are roughly 3 feet in a yard, so divide by 3 and you get 134.3 yards :)

You can change the length by using a common.ini file, but the pitch graphics don't move (ie all of the white lines), but the goals, corner flags, linesmen and players all move accordingly and act correctly. If I could find the pitch lines file (and I will eventually) I can make it look like a pitch. But then, the penalty area is too small (because it reduces the whole length and width, when really you need to remove just the space between the centre circle and the penalty box), but I reckon you can solve this. The biggest problem is set pieces (ie corners and free kicks). The players not with the ball (ie those moving around and in the wall) ignore the new boundaries and use totally different ones (but no the original ones). Nobody will help me find the file for the graphics. I reckon you can change the actually penalty box size too, but the problem is the AI in the set pieces (at all other times, they work with the new boundaries).

Try it. Make a file called 'common.ini' in the main FIFA directory. Put in the lines :

FIELD_LENGTH=5520
FIELD_WIDTH=3648

I can't remember now though if you use the word 'field' or 'pitch' before the other bits, so try both!

Isn't that a pathetic way to make the game harder? I know people here don't like FIFA being compared to "the greater game" but this problem didn't exist in the other one. Nor did it exist in FIFA 2003. And both games were challenging. So it's possible to make the game hard and actually let the player control the team.

BTW has anyone found a way to change the passing system? It seems to be that you can't decide where to pass because the computer decides it for you.

Actually I don't think this piece of junk is going to be rated very high in any reviews. Not that it had been for the last few years. But what does EA care. They get their money anyway.

I think that the AI defending is a lot worse in 05 than 04, but that might be to do with having so much space around them to cover

Their attacking is more creative, yet their defending is about the same as last year. I should have specified.

Clever. Makes sense.

I would probably say that the AI for positioning of players should change. That would make this a whole new game.

If they would force the midfielders to play around the box and have the defenders sitting at midfield to support cleared balls that would probably elimnate all the problems. Well except for the ones where you own a console and can't edit it.

Maybe just maybe EA Sports will release an Xbox update patch, Ya right!!!

I'm not playing career mode but just a league mode. One of the disadvantages is that you can't play in any of the cups while just playing in the leage. I don't think you can get relegated either although no danger of that I'm in 5th place.

I've scored quite a few goals from midfield. I run a 4-4-2 with a wing attack, using a defensive midfielder and an attacking midfielder lined up together in the middle and RWB and LWB on defense.

Overall, the game improved over last year, but I think this will be the last FIFA title I buy. I thought I was done after they got rid of the snow feature, but I'm bored with it after just a few days.

I just won a game 9-0 which is absolute crap... then I lost to the bottom team in the table 1-0. That's just not right...

Bye bye FIFA

Im using the 4-4-1-1 formation on Xbox with attacking mentality and possession attacking style. Most of my scoring opportunities come from counter-attacks, when i send a lobbed through ball to a striker, ending up with a 2 on 2 situation with my 2 strikers against the 2 centre-backs. This happens almost every time i regain possession, resulting in about 5 point-blank chances in a half..

Something has to be wrong

I'm now playing with Rangers in career and it seems that the better the team the more goals scored by midfielders. I now have a pretty realistic balance with goals scored by midfielders. They are mainly through long shots, set pieces or if they are played through after a forward run.

I guess AndrewC is right. I've played so far 2 seasons with Yeovil, 1 with QPR, and now I'm playing with Bröndby, which has quite a good midfield and attack (but a cr@p defense...).

So far, after 10 games:

20 goals, 14 scored by forwards. 3 by Kahlenberg, my CAM, 1 from a right winger (Henriksson), 1 from the CDM (Tengstedt), 1 from my RB, Johansen. Only the goal scored by my RB was from set piece. I'm playing 4-1-2-1-2, so in counter-attacks the CAM has quite a lot of opportunities.

Though I'd love to see my backs coming forward more often, I very rarely have a chance with them (except for set pieces). I only scored once with a defender from open play, it was with QPR. After a corner the ball came out, with 2 passes I got the ball to Hamilton, my RWB, then I managed to sneak into the penalty area and score low past the keeper :)

(mind you: I'M playing on professional level)
