To check whether your gamepad is supported or not, you can open C
Program Files\EA SPORTS\FIFA 2004\data\system\config.dat (using notepad) and check if your gamepad is stated there.
Also if your gamepad is supported you should be able to see it ingame in the controll setup after patching the game ------ (for how to successfully patch the game, please see other thread).
So if you don't have a supported gamepad like me, you will find that the config.dat in the "my document" stating:
NO "XXXXXXX"
XXXXXX is the name of your gamepad and you can check this in the control panel. Mine is "USB Joystick"
Let us begin on how to do this. The main point is to RENAME your gamepad as one supported by the game. To do this, you need to change your registry key. First of all, from the config.dat file (in the C
Program Files\EA SPORTS\FIFA 2004\data\system\config.dat), select the one you want. Definitely you would choose "Logitech DualAction USB". It is located at the bottom.
Now, the main step:
1. go to start > run
2. type in "regedit" and then enter
3. highlight "my computer" since you need to find from the very beginning
4. go to edit > find
5. type in "XXXXXX" - note : no quotation marks needed, i.e. mine is USB Joystick
6. remember to check all the three boxes ( machine code K, value V, and Data D)
7. press search and be patient
8. everytime you find "XXXXXX" - modify it to "Logitech DualAction USB" - be careful, do not use rename, use modify
9. there should be a few more to modify until the end and this process last for around 30 secs depending on how many registry keys you have. The entry LocationInformation cannot be edited and it shows the true name of your gamepad.
Close the registry and check in the Control Panel to discover that you have a Logitech DualAction USB!!!!!
Now you can launch the game and configure the control.
[Optional]
If you want to change the default setting, then you need to modify the C
Program Files\EA SPORTS\FIFA 2004\data\system\config.dat (using notepad).
For example, Logitech DualAction USB has the following layout in default:
10 1 2 3 5 4 6 7 8 10 9 corresponding to:
menu, lob, pass, shot, trigger run, through pass, sprint, OTB, walk (the last two numbers 10 and 9 can be ignored and the "10" between the two name strings denotes that the game will use 10 buttons for the game)
To change to PS2 default (if I'm right):
10 2 3 4 5 1 6 7 8 10 9
You may need to backup the file first or recover from CD1 if needed.
