How do I manually send players on runs?

A lot of times I find myself on offence against 2 or so defenders, but the AI controlled players next to me just don't move fast enough. Is there any way to trigger player runs?

Agreed, possibly the only gameplay feature thats better in fifa.
AI controlled players just seem really slow to make runs in PES, and theres no way of controlling them. I hate it when you're running at the defense with the other striker standing and watching you.

Yes there is more than one way to do that :)
A) Individual
B) The team method

A) The way it is in FIFA, where you press the symbol of the player you want to make a run is more or less automated in PES.
You first need to set this in the Formation menu before you start the game (You also can change it during the match).
Go the this menu: Formation->individual->Attack
In this attack menu you can choose any player (his dot in the screen above will blink), now press X and you see 8 arrow-directions, from which you can choose upto 2 directions this selected player will run.
As you can imagine, you can make all players run where you want when in possesion.
But you are not ready now, because you want them to run back when you loose possesion, right? If you finish setting this attacking arrows, go back one menu and choose the defense menu:
Again you can select the players, but this time you instruct them how to defend: Choice between low, medium or high defensive attitude. This way you tell which players need to defend most or only a bit.
Now you have combined players attacking and defending attitude.
For instance when you select your sidemidfielder (LM or RM) to attack with an arrow forward (along the wing) and only a small defensive arrow (blue small arrow) then this player is most likely to make runs for you, also depending his attribute on ATTACK (see his attributes in the middle of the screen).
If his ATTACK-attribute is high (in the mid 80's or higher), he will make more and better runs than when he's only in the 60's.
Same of course for defending; the higher the DEFENSE-attribute, the better he is able to run back in right positions when lost possesion.

B) That was the individual part of running, now team-running...
Leave the Formation menu and go to strategy.
You now select semi-auto and here you see a list of strategies.
If you want to make runs with wingers, you select right or left side attack and if you want to let your centre back go forward, you choose CB-overlap.
There are more things to set of course but this is already a large post :) I use the auto-settings most for off side and counter attack and no-strategy. The manual strategy button ( L2 ) is for zone press.
That was team setting.

If you want to make all players run forward and backward on command, just forget everything I told you and just press L2+R1 for everybody attack one level higher or L2+R2 for everybody defend one level down. There are five attack/defend levels.

Hope it helps a bit... :)

I think it´s more "work" compared to the Fifa button BUT isn´t that the point that you can adjust your team more and more so that players develop a certain behaviour on their position?!

Well, as long as it is just the "demo" (217mb full game without commentary is my impression so far :) ) just use the different passing types like the others said above.

The short pass is the short pass as it is in Fifa. Use the "deadly pass" moreoften, going from defensive end to midfield for example! Get a feeling for it.

One thing more. The Fifa "sent" button: CRAP, since you send a player which is not aware of the pass after being sent...like so many other little things.

Another tip, use a guy with the 'playmaking' special ability,
and TIME a thru lob pass (L1 + O), this will put the ball in front and your winger will chase for it.

If you time it right just as your winger is running forward, it'll be a real quick forward run.

Not sure if someone has mentioned this but, the 1-2 is another way of initiating a run, though it requires one more step of having to, first, pass.

2 ways to do this.

1. Pass to someone holding L1. The person who passed would start running forwards, you decide to pass, thru-pass, lob, thru-lob.

2. I believe (I know what it is when I'm holding the PS2 controller, but not now in front of my computer) pressing R1 right after making a pass will make him run forwards as well.

Yes, you are right.. thought I mentioned it in my post above but I didn't.

I am not sure about point 2 of you, never tried it.
About point 1: Maybe good to say that you should press pass, thru-pass, lob, thru-lob BEFORE you received the ball.
You also can decide NOT to return the pass in which case the first player only makes a run forward to confuse the defenders... yes, this game has quite som depht :)
