I know there is already a thread about this, but I thought it would be insensitive to post it in there.
I was involed in a conversation on a fulham message board today about the Hillsborough disaster, and I wish to share the thoughts with this board.
We all know what happened on that day with the tragedy, and there were various reasons for it. Obviously the police and ambulance service not doing there job properly, but we also seem to forget the 1000 odd pissed-ticketless scouser's who stormed the turnstiles to watch the match. For the second time in 4 years, Liverpool fans had created a situation which would, in time, have far reaching effects on the game as we all knew it. First it was Heysel in ’85 and the subsequent ban on all English teams in European competition - something that robbed Wimbledon of their rightful place in the Cup Winners Cup. Then it was Hillsborough – the fallout from which was the Taylor report and the unpopular consequence (at least amongst real football fans) of all-seater stadia.
IMO it is not the terraces themselves that are the problem. (Infact they are a lot safer, in the case of an emergancy than seating is.) The real problem as i see it was the fences sorrounding the pens. The fans at the front could not escape the crushing as the fences would not allow them.
Anyway, what are your opinions on standing area's of football stadiums? (ala Germany) Would they work with proper ticket distrabution, or without fences? What are people's views on it.
