You are right, assigning nicknames does NOT work. That's been posted on the Dugout & SI Games a few times.

The only way to "find them" aside from using the Generated Player Finder that I have noticed is many of the regens are brought straight into their nation's U21 side in their first season in the league. If David Seaman retires and suddenly there's a hot new face on the England 21s between the posts there is a good chance it could be him. ;)

I think they keep the same surname also.
I had 3 regens I think
Jaap Seedorf
Frans Davids & Jens Larsson

They were all the same nationality but I wasn't sure about positions

Regens keep the same mental stats.

Aggression, determination, positioning, workrate, teamwork, decisions, influence.

They also keep the same position and potential. Countries like France and so on, players that originate from those countries will regen as French. I.E Pires regen will be French. However, someone like Benarbia who is Algerian will regen from someone like Toga.

There surname changes.

They can also regenerate at any age. It takes 6-12 months after a player retires for them to regenerate, I waited anxiousley 12 months for Gazza's regen, he regenerated at 28 years old.
