May I know what's the difference between this league and the previous Greek league?
Alot of things actually. How about the most important for the sport in Greece?
1)Administration
Super League:
A separate and independent governing body that will oversee the league's function. Elected by the teams presidents.
Old Alpha Ethniki:
Corrupt bosses with team ties (Olympiakos, AEK, Panathiniakos, Panionios, Egaleo) that ran the league.
2)Allocation of funds
Super League:
1-3% of league earnings from ticket sales, sponsoring, TV rights go to second and third division teams
Old Alpha Ethniki:
What does allocation of funds mean?
3)Infrastructure
Super League:
a)Teams with stadiums less than 5,000 sitting capacity will not be promoted to the Super League from the Second Division.
b)Every team must have an academy to train young players.
Old Alpha Ethniki:
a)Teams with 54 fans promoted.
b)What is academy?
4)Reffereing (HUGE problem)
Super League:
A new and independent school supported by UEFA will give accredidation to referies. Only with a diploma from this school can a referee oversee a game.
Old Alpha Ethniki:
What is offside? ......A butcher, a baker, a teacher, overseeing games.
5)Promotion of the sport
Superleague:
Mass media of Greece promoting the sport as it deserves adding "hype" to the games.
Old Alpha Ethniki:
Olympiakos-Panathinaikos the derby of Greece every season, year after year.
BOOOOOORING
6)Hooliganism
Superleague:
British system. THANK GOD! FINALLY.....every fan's seat is assigned and all Superleague stadia are equipted with closed circuit TV. Any one caught serves 6 month jail time minimum. Every team is responsible for maintaining a security force.
Old Alpha Ethniki:
Come on its just kids being kids. Let them take a bat to each other's head.
That's just a few changes. I know it doesn't seem big for current top leagues but now finally Greece is headed in the right direction. The 2004 European Championship is going to finally ripple down to the league level.
