Hagi takes Gala helm

Galatasaray have appointed Romanian Gheorghe Hagi as their new coach, replacing Fatih Terim who resigned earlier this month, Turkish newspaper websites reported on Monday. Hagi, widely regarded as Romania's greatest ever player, helped lead Galatasaray to four Turkish titles and triumph in the UEFA Cup in 2000.

Nobody from the club was immediately available to comment.

The Hurriyet newspaper website said Ozhan Canaydin, re-elected as club chairman at the weekend, would hold a news conference at 16:00 local time (15:00 CET).

Terim resigned on March 5 after the club were knocked out of the UEFA Cup in the third round, but remained in charge until Saturday's game against Rizespor which Galatasaray lost 2-1, capping a disappointing second spell at the club for the coach.

The Istanbul side are currently sixth in the first division, 19 points adrift of leaders Fenerbahce.

Hagi, 39, returned to football after an 18-month absence last summer when he was appointed coach of Turkish first division club Bursaspor. He resigned after the team made a poor start to the season.

During an illustrious career, he played for Steaua Bucharest, Real Madrid, Brescia, Barcelona and Galatasaray, where he hung up his boots in 2000. He also had a spell as coach of the Romanian national side in 2001.

Gheorghe Hagi was not very successful as he was the coach of Romania national team. They could't even qualify for WC2002. After that he canceled the contract and went to a turkish team (I don't remember the name of that team  ). All I know is, that he wasn't successful there either...
He was a great football player, but as a coach he needs much more experience. :mrpimp:

Cya ! :D

Yes, I hope it for Gala that he'll succeed. But in my opinion, it would have been better for Gala, if Hagi had been the assistent of Fatih Terim...... :mrpimp:

I don't think you guys get the point, you love Hagi, he knows Galatasaray very well etc...he was an excellent player one of the best ever but he is a ******* terrible coach he has no game plan no strategy he doesnt know who to sub and when it was his fault that we didn't qualify to WC2002 because he made some of the worst coaching decisions i have ever seen in the playoff matchup agains Slovenia. You guys need to start wishing that you'll finish in the top 10 this year.

Good player horrible coach :read:

He ruined Bursaspor, I hope he ruins Galatasaray ;)

I agree with Steaua, he was a good player but a bad coach.

Well, Galatasaray is in 2nd place right now in the TSL; looks like he isn't doing all that bad.
