My player ratings for the U.S.:

Keller - 8 - Couple of outstanding saves to keep the game level.

Cherundolo - 8 - Worked his butt off. Got down the wing much better today.

Onyewu - 8 - Not a perfect game but much improved and he really helped to keep us in the game.

Pope - 3 - Well what can you say about this. Decided to run his own one-man offside trap and not tell anyone else which cost us a goal. Plus he was overly physical with lots of dumb challenges that culminated in a red card.

Bocanegra - 6 - A definite improvement over Lewis but he wasn't much good in the attack and looked exhausted by the end.

Mastroeni - 5 - I thought he dominated the midfield very well. The tackle that got the red card was not worthy of a sending off, but it was a foolish tackle nonetheless, no reason to do that just before halftime when your team is in the ascendency.

Reyna - 6 - Some good control and vision but faded badly in the second half.

Dempsey - 7 - A bright spot. Definitely decided to take this opportunity with both hands, ran at defenders, made things happen. I think he should get the nod against Ghana.

Convey - 6 - Solid performance. Poor shot putting it over the bar when he was totally unmarked.

Donovan - 8 - This is what he needs to do. Worked hard, passed well. I thought he should have been more willing to pull the trigger a couple of times but he's obviously taken Arena's criticism to heart and raised his game.

McBride - 6 - Good effort and a few good chances but he was rendered ineffective by the sendings off. Nobody around to pick up his knock-downs. Probably would have made more sense to bring on Eddie Johnson in the late stages.

SUBS:

Beasley - 5 - Unlucky on his goal but he still seemed too hesitant. He's the only guy on there with fresh legs, he's got to run at people.

Conrad - 6 - Not much time, did an adequate job.

By the way, can I go on the record saying that two yellows in any stage gets an automatic ban is a stupid rule. It's STUPID. I think it should be three at the least. If you get a red, absolutely, the ban is deserved, but come on if you don't get sent off in a game, why should you have to miss the next game? That's stupid and teams lose their best players. For example Muntari and Gyan will miss the next match, and what did Gyan do? He thought the ref blew the whistle and took his penalty early. For that he gets a ban? Garbage. That is GARBAGE! Shouldn't even be a card, how many whistles are in the stands?

Considering there have been a lot of needless bookings during the tournament so far then yes i completely agree.

Yes, I agree. I think you could probably appeal that booking, right? With the way referees have been reaching for cards, FIFA either needs to reevaluate the two bookings and you're out rule or tell the officials to pull their heads out of their asses and let them play.

Those were almost the exact grades I was going to post. Great minds think alike. I would have bumped Los and Reyna to a 7 though. Maybe Convey as well.

Well I am very pumped up now. I think we have an ok chance to advance now. Someone correct me if any of this sounds wrong.

Italy/Czech: Czech has no strikers. Even their third guy who started today will miss the next match because of yellows(I believe I saw that earlier, right?) Rosicky will have a hard time beating Buffon like he beat Keller with his long shots in game one, and I don't see how the Czechs will score more than 1 goal. I think Italy will be motivated by this draw, and I hope they pull it out.

U.S./Ghana: Much like the Czechs Ghana is down two strikers, right? So hopefully the US can just find a way to score a goal and then hold on. I'm not going to disrespect Ghana at all, they were outstanding today against the Czechs.

Overall I think we really do have a chance to advance here. I'd put it at maybe 40%, because I think Italy will beat the Czechs and I think we're capable of squeaking past Ghana. Then a collossal match with Brazil, that would be amazing, even if they crush us.

Yea that was utter garbage by the ref. Bad enough it took him an eternity to give th red card to the Czech Rep player, and then his dumbass goes and books Muntari. The only positive is one less player the US has to worry about for their game.

I still can't believe how much of a hard time the Italians had against a 9 man US team.
Believe it, man. :)

Nobody takes us seriously. (Well, the Czech game didn't help of course, but I mean even before that nobody took us seriously.)

not quite, if you win and Italy wins, you're through.

You only need to win by a f*ckload of goals If Italy loses or draws

Oh right, for a second there I thought the Czechs were on 4 points. Don't know why I thought that.

I agree with Brondby's ratings although I'd have Donovan on a 7 or 7.5.

Also, I think the U.S. is still not tactically up to snuff with the best teams in the world. For example, when Cherundolo attacks, Dempsey filled in the defensive role. A more tactically advanced manuever is to have them attack the wing together and have the CB's and the LB slide over to fill in the space on defense.

Ditto for attacking with the whole team. I realize we were worried about a counter attack, but Bocanegra needs to get up there on the left flank when the offense stalls on the left side, get the ball, and swing in a cross. When the offense stalls near the box, guys like Bocanegra and Mastroeni need to fill in the space. For example on Mastroeni's amazing shot that just went over, he was reluctant to come forward and fill in the space, the only reason he got forward was because Convey or Bocanegra gave him the ball and made him. Also, Donovan and McBride are reluctant to run to the corners when the attack stalls on the wings. Make that diagonal run into the corner!!

All three reds were warranted, I thought the ref did a good job he made all the right calls he wasn't off beat once and I really can't see any other ref doing a better job. It really was an ill tempered affair at times, the ref controled the game as well as anyone else could and he showed he was boss and took no crap. Disgraceful on both sides, really. I don't know about the rest of you but I came to watch a football game, not a war or wrestling match. There was some good football in the game, some nice passing but it really was ruined by the terrible tackling and jersey pulling. So much for fair play, i'm really sick of players and teams playing like that,it shames football just as much as diving, corruption and hooliganism. I'd expect this kinda of play from Turkey. By no means a good performance, the US played way too aggresive and the Azzuri... well what can I say.

I agree in principle, but we don't want Bocanegra going too far up the field too often. He needs to play like Hejduk did in 2002. He's possibly the worst dribbler on the team, I always get nervous when he's far up the field with the ball at his feet.

Yes. Unfortunately at left back we're either limited to Lewis (poor defense) or Bocanegra (poor offense). I would rather err on the side of caution and play Bocanegra. No, he's not going to be able to provide much support down the left but in the Czech game we saw what happens when a fullback forgets his defensive duties. Ghana is a must-win so I would prefer keeping the back tight.

Wasn't that funny until I saw the the offside joke. Brilliant man. I mean how many offsides did Italy have? :funny:

I actually think De Rossi helped Italy when he elbowed Mcbride. We(USA) seemed to be playing pretty well up until that point. After the elbow and his red card it looked like some of our guys got too riled up and started committing stupid fouls. You could tell the US players were pissed off after the elbow. We'll never know though.
