Getting the right hair!

How are you guys getting the hair just the way you want it. Most of the time when I find a face that is good for the map, the hair usually isn't. I know there used to be a Hair Converter in order to import hair objects from one o. model to an o.model with the face. Without this program the only way i see to get the hair right is to edit the hair object. Is there a faster way?
