Geforce 6600?

Hi all :)

I have a P4 2.4ghz with 1GB and a Geforce 5200MX (poor me :().

I want to buy a new Graphics card and the 6600 seems like a good option? Does anyone have experience with it or can anyone recommend me a better Video card? I'm willing to spend between €150,- and €200,- ($160 - $210).

I take you're talking AGP here... I'd go for a 6800GS... or a 7600 if possible (not sure if they have AGP...) but then again, I don't know the prices for these cards in Holland... in the usa they are within your price range...

What is AGP and what is the advantage of it? (You can ask me anything about software, but I've never been interested in all these hardware things before :)).

If you must get the 6600, atleast get a 6600GT.

Yes, I've seen that the GT is much better :) But does the current game run smooth on a 6600? I'm not planning on buying a new card next year hahaha.. Or would a 6800 be better? Or prehaps higher?

Get a 6800GS AGP. It's been said that 7600GT AGP will come out. But still not out yet if it ever comes out that is.

As for your AGP question you've got...
:google:

But what the heck, AGP is an Accelerated Graphics Port. lol. Basically nowadays the more recent mobo have a PCI-E 16x slot for the graphics card. But the not so recent mobos have an AGP slot for the graphic card.

Your's would most likely have an AGP slot. You can always double check on it.

And since you mentioned you won't be changing your graphic card next year after getting a new card now, I'd suggest the 6800GS. Don't even think of getting the 6600, you'd be suffering and will definitely want a new gfx card. The minimum is 6600GT. But till the 7600GT AGP version is released, just get the 6800GS AGP.

PS. Check whether your PSU have enough power. The last thing you want is having to start another thread asking why your PC keep rebooting by itself...

They will run fine in the 6600, though don't expect them to be on a high resolution or with all the settings on max... of course, a 6800 would be better, and I'd say that at the moment, it'd be a better choice considering cost and performance... there aren't many cards on AGP better than a 6800 Ultra...

if you're planning to get a card to last a lot longer, then it'd be wiser to get a new motherboard with a PCI-Express slot, though the cost of that would be a lot higher

as for the power supply, 400W is enough, though it depends on the other stuff on the pc (I've seen people running it on 300W)

Thanks all :)

I guess it'll be the 6800 GT...

Problem is: I've seen lot's of versions of the Geforce 6800 GT (Club 3D, XFX, MSI, Asus, Albatros, Leadtek, Gigabyte, Point of view, etc.).

What's the difference between all those versions? It's just a "Geforce 6800GT" right?

It means they're based on the same chipset, though they can have different performance... I'll leave to someone more knowledgeable to tell you which brand to go with though...

same chipset from nvidia but release by different manufacturer. nvidia provide the gpu (graphic processing unit) to the manufacture and they hook the gpu on their board. different manufacture may come out different quality, some of them can be poor.

when you look for a graphic card, make sure you pay attention on the memory. it could be 128mb, 256mb or 512mb on the same version (eg: 6600GT 128mb & 6600GT 256mb). in addition, some manufacture will release an overclock version and mostly it will cost you more.

as for AGP, check whether your mobo support AGP8X. if no, the card will scale down to the highest your mobo can support. eg: if you mobo can only support up to AGP4X, even though 6800GT can run on AGP8X but it will run on 4X eventually.

the answer could be yes or not depends on what the game you're playing. if you expect the game like Doom 3, FEAR, Battlefield 2, Oblivion running smoothly on max setting, the answer is no :)

If his budget did allow it, the 7800GT AGP would beat the 6800 Ultra.

No it doens't :)

I'm going for the 6800 GS AGP :) That should do the trick right?

What manufacturers deliver good quality and wich poor?

personally i have try XFX, MSI and Leadtek before and they have my vote. i don't know why XFX always a bit expensive compare to other. so Leadtek will be my first choice (just because it is cheaper than XFX :p)

i heard BFG have a pretty good card as well

I have a XFX at this moment and never had any problems (except that my games are running very slowwwwwwwww right now) :wootman:

I ran 3DMark 2005 yesterday and I got a score of 259 on 1064x768 without AF and AA!! :hump:

The reason XFX cards are more expensive are due to the fact that they are usually pre-overclocked. :)
