Gameplay - This is why Fifa 2006 is too easy

Playing Fifa 2006 daily more than 1 hour every day during the last 8 months I think I finally understood which is the great limitation of its gameplay that makes the game too easy even with cheating modifications of the gameplay. The problem stand in how the players are disposed on the field during the game: EA tried to implement the modern style of playing football with extremely high defenses and very compressed lines (defenders, midfielders and forwarders): the objective was indeed to generate a more tactical and maybe realistical style of game: in the modern football the defence plays very far from the goal area trying to trap in offside the forwarder.

This could be extremely cool and realistic only if the players can move at a realistic speed: modern football is a game of athletism based a lot on running and physical strenght, and here comes the limitation of fifa 2006: the players movements are not fast enough and they take a lot of time to reach the goal area: figure how many times the CPU forwarder receive the ball near the very high line of the defence: he tries to elude the defender, and maybe he is able to do (but the trapping ability with contrast is very easy, this has to be noticed), but then he points to the area and is ALWAYS possible to reach him with another defender and trap the ball: in the real football the sprint of the forwarder is decisive and usually he is able to reach the area without the possibility of intervention by another defender. To explain better this concept I will use these images:

This is the way in which in Fifa 2006 the teams are disposed, the reds are attacking and this is the way in which they do it on the field:

the teams are extremely compressed between the Defense Lines (blue and red): they play in a very narrow section on the field. So one of the red fw will receive the ball very far from the goal, maybe he will win the contrast/dribbling against the central defender but the time that the fw need to cover the yellow distance is too high for the maximum speed reachable in the game and the other central or one of the the wing back will surely reach him.

All this is more understandable if we see how the gameplay works on Fifa 2005: the main difference is the section of the field covered by the formations, and is as follows:

The section of the field on which the teams play are much wider and so the defense lines are nearer to the goal area: this means more possibility for the forwarders to see the goal, to try to shoot with results at the net, means more game on the midfield and less contrasts and, most important, proper distances to run for the players on the field considering the engine that moves the game.

This does not mean that the 2005 style is more realistical, the 2006 is more, but the 2005 style has greater results in terms of gameplay, variability of game, skill by the computer. This is why to feel an entertaining gameplay with balanced game in which the CPU shoots at goal as the human player does, I tried (with an advice from Fifaccitiu) to play with reduced size of the field in fifa 2006: you can't edit the way in which the team are disposed on the field for what I know, you can just edited how much defenders, midfielders etc. are in the formations with Formation master, so the solution I tried was this reduction of the field size: in this way the defense lines are again as they were in Fifa 2005 and the gameplay is again entertaining and hard as it was and you are not always able to stop the forwarder who is trying to reach your goal.

Of course the ideal solution would be to change the disposition of the players on the field, making wider the area of the game, the part of the field on which the teams effectively play, but for what I know this is not possible. Actually the limitation of reducing the field size is the wrong position of the players on free kicks because they act as the size of the field was the original, for the ones interested anyway in making Fifa 2006 an harder and more difficult and balanced game I suggest to do this experiment and to see how better the gameplay of fifa 2005 is in comparation with fifa 2006.

Completely agree... Me and NK were talking bout improving his gameplay to make it more realistic and we talked bout how the attacking players take years to get in the box when a man is on the run. I find myself crossing to one player in the box or none at all :(
Another thing is follow up strikers. Say the ball hits the crossbar or posts, or even if the goalkeeper parries it away, where's the follow up shot from the 2nd (4-4-2) or even the 3rd (4-3-3) etc striker to bury the ball in the back of the net. Player postioning in FIFA has always been a problem since, well as far as i can remember Fifa 2004? 2005?, but definately shows the weakness in the game in 06.
The trouble is, I think AI in that sense and player positioning will probably be hard-coded into the game and not something someone can edit in a dat or ini file :-/.
If it goes ahead, good luck with the experiment. :)

i think EA for 07, should let the player move their people in the pitch, and redistribute the game where you want, i mean, i don't want a 3-4-3, 5-3-2, 4-2-2-2, i want to make my players run all over the pitch, or make them change their positions, or make one player run in the middle, to the left and right, and you can't do that, do u understand?

Wait til you try V8 then say it's too easy haha. By the way buddy there is no 'cheating' modification of gameplay. The CPU plays different to the user, something I'm trying to 'close the gap' on. Having the CPU take more shots is very possible! I'm close enough, but the values of CPU and USER cannot be balanced, because the game isn't read that way, even if it looks as simple as 'CPU' and 'USER', those two terms mean more than not having someone sat next to you with two controllers plugged into the computer.

I would check out V8 when that is released. The game follows the same 'design' as V3, so it's not totally balanced on paper, but in-game it feels more balanced that any other update I have done before, plus it's much harder to score and the CPU take a crack at goal more often resulting in far more exciting gameplay. It's more 'developed' than V3 because I've made a lot of progress since then.

V7 lacked difficulty. V8 is totally a BIG push forward, just as V6 was to V5 :)

Have faith mate, I understand there are limitations, obviously I do edit the gameplay I know! But we make do with what we got at that is cool, just as CEP breaks the boundaries of what the standard FIFA 06 offers to gamers, I hope that V8 will offer new entertainment and challenge to the gameplay.

Cheers mate,
NK.

No NK, there is nothing bad in it, but setting -1000 to CPU reaction time and 1000 to human is a cheat, as lowering human shooting skill to 20% setting CPU to 100%: this has given good result, but is always a form of cheating setting superhuman skills to the CPU and extra-poor to the human. I'd really like to discover that the v8 of your gp is finally hard enough but you post this stuff about difficulty before every release you prepare, so all the respect for your work on the ini strings, but frankly I don't think that the next version will really make a revolution in the difficulty of the game because, as I tried to explain, is a problem of proportions and game engine.

Indeed, FIFA 06 does have limits you are right. Well, I hope V8 closes the gap of the difficulty issue. I myself find it easy, too easy at times and it's a challenge in itself to create something that is going to change all that and stay the same game!

Ah well, I'm sure V8 will improve over my efforts.

i dont mean to be rude but try fifa manager 06, it gives u even more control, the essence of fifa 06 is the players being on the pitch himself controlling individual player one at a time, but what u say is smthg a manager would like, not an individual player

i really like the gameplay of v7 really with the modified heading system, it challenges me to be even more precise in timing my jump and header it was pretty cool
