Gameplay....gameplay...gameplay

To EA Sports:

I have been a regular FIFA player from 1998 to 2000.
But the minute I got my hands on Winning Eleven from Konami
I completely stopped playing FIFA.

There is one reason why I have "converted" to Winning Eleven.
"GAMEPLAY".
No other game in the market comes close to Konami's accurate representation of the sport of Football/Soccer.
Most of the major teams play differently. Man United, Arsenal,
Real Madrid, AC Milan ....all of them play differently.
Different teams play with different styles.
The best players are immediately recognizable through their
different style and quality of play.
There are endless formations you can apply to your team.
There are endless strategies that can be applied to the
team you control.
Players have random "Form" which affects their ability to play.
Player performance is based on a mind-boggling set of statistics and attributes specific to that player.
Winning Eleven is the closest thing to real-life football/gaming on a computer/PS2.

Last year when EA made a big hype about FIFA 2003 and it's revolutionary gameplay, I was tempted.
I bought the game, played it for a week........
and I returned it. I went straight back to Winning Eleven.
Don't get me wrong. FIFA 2003 is the best FIFA game since 1999.
I admire the fact that you have so many leagues and Stadia.
But these things are mainly cosmetic attractions. Once the player
starts digging into the game, the gameplay becomes repetitive
and boring. There is no replay value to this game.
All the teams play the same style. The best players are only distinguishable through their looks.

In the next FIFA 2004, you should try to improve the gameplay
to make it more varied and as close as possible to Winning Eleven. Konami has the best gameplay.
You must try to compete in terms of gameplay.
Try to make the performance of the player based on a much larger amount of statistics and attributes and "form".
Also improve the transfer system. I think World Tour Soccer has
the best transfer system. You select a team to play and it accumulates money through good performances.

FIFA has strived for realism in the graphics. And it has done a good job. In the Audio some of the chants can be improved.
For chants, it's a good idea to take it directly from real-life instead of morphing the sounds and tunes.
The stadia are great. But some of the goal-nets need to be different at different stadia.

Ball-physics is another area that needs a lot of improvement in FIFA. EA sports has made a first step by detaching the ball from the player. But shooting is still ridiculously scripted.
Look at Konami and see the level of control a player has when he shoots the ball. There is a power bar plus the best controls for chipping or lobbing.
You will need to add all this for FIFA.
Plus what happened to the heading in FIFA ?
Heading and shooting should be based on skill. Again look
at konami for reference.
The free-kick system is total garbage in FIFA. Look at Konami and see how they make it an art form. You can add power, pace, curve and placement. You need skill to score goals.
Different player have free-kick attributes. In winning eleven
Beckham curves the ball beautifully even using his famous
action. Roberto Carlos uses his long run-up of blasts thunderbolts with pace and power.

Animations : I think Winning Eleven and World Tour Soccer have the best animations. Much better than FIFA.
FIFA's animations are so repetitive. You get bored after a while.

Get an editor....Winning Eleven has an editor in which you can
edit teams, players....

Get a training mode....but this would only be applicable if you make the gameplay realistic and challenging enough to require a training mode.

That's all I can think of now.
In summary, FIFA 2004 should have all the leagues, stadia, licenses PLUS the GAMEPLAY.
If you can spend 90% of your time on gameplay improvements
and try to mimic Winning Eleven, then you will get a much better
game.

Till then, I will not buy FIFA anymore.

How come you didn't play the Demo b4 buying FIFA 2003? Demo is the full game. I suggest all of us play the Demo first b4 buying this game from now on. judge it on the Demo nothing else.

In about 2 weeks when I get my hands on WE6 here in NA for my PL2 than I will say good-bye to FIFA. I will play the demo every year when FIFA comes out and than judge it on that, if I like it than I will buy it and if I don't I will keep playing WE6 and support Konami..... Simple as that EA!!!

I must agree with a lot of things said on this forum concerning Fifa03 and its gameplay and what-not, but i think if all of you are serious about not buying any of the Fifa series like you said you are, then Fifa are in trouble, unless they make a serious advancement on Fifa03 for Fifa04, then there may not even be a Fifa05?

Well thats my opinion.

But Matthewsss explained it best, graphics are a great thing to have, but if you have a **** gameplay, then you are better of not releasing anything.

Stadiums are great, i was impressed by the inclusion of chants, but the actual gameplay is terrible, just players running away from the ball, that being the most annoying thing for me, plus an abundance of other things.

Well that's all, i really hope EA take on board some of the constructive critism that members have had to offer and come up with a killer Fifa04. 'Cause no one wants to see Fifa go down the drain, we want a great game that will be competition for Konami and so on, so the games get better and better.

Amen!

Amen to this thread.

Get the gameplay wrong in FIFA 2004 and you may as well not bother with FIfA 2005. I think most people will d/l or copy FIFA 2004 anyway, they've been screwed over too severely with FIFA 2003 to trust EA Sports again unless FIFA 2004 is at least as good as ISS let alone PES2 or WE6.

Well said Matt, and if the EA crowd do read these boards your excellent summary of the Series should send em ducking for cover and back to the drawing board, and if not, well too bad for them. -- :)

Doesn't FIFA 2003 have the Carlos freekick? I guess that's the problem with sending it back after a week. ;)

But the thing is, after all this and agreeing (which I do, you hit the nail on the head with so much you said then) with what you've said, will EA really spend so much time on the gameplay? They might indeed, but they just don't prevail there, they always mess it up, with crappy bugs and stupid animations like the keeper coming out for the ball and picking it up WAY outside his area, HOW F*CKED UP IS THAT?

Anyway, if I play the demo and see loads of crappy scripted gameplay, EVEN if it looks nice, THAT'S NOT ENOUGH, and this is what many gamers' are saying now, IT'S JUST NOT ENOUGH!

GAMEPLAY is the main part, nice graphics are good, great even to have, but WHAT'S THE POINT IN A GAME (and I've said this SOOO many times) IF IT LOOKS GREAT BUT PLAYS CRAP! EH? YOU DON'T KNOW EA? Well, you've done it for the past 4-5 years, you'll never get it right, THAT'S WHAT WE'VE LEARNT! :kader:

:) nick, in FIFA 2003 roberto carlos' freekicks are with his right foot plus they are not like in real-life..also many other players have the same free-kick style in FIFA.

....look at Winning Eleven or PES2...you will see his long run-up with the initial quick movement of feet. He's the only player who takes the free-kicks like that, both in real-life and in this game.

:read:
Ive thought of a great idea for fifa 2004.

Players dont just get fatigue in football games but throught the season. For example if you use the same player for 10 games straight, then his performance will go down and he wont play as good.

So in order to have a player with high performance rest him once in a while. Maybe you could have a new stats bar which says performance which is out of 10. 1 been the lowest on performance and 10 been the highest.

Also the fitness stats bar may affect the performance bar. For example the higher the fitness bar is the less chance a player has of getting fatigue. So therefore if a player has a high fitness, he wont get fatigue quickly and his performance stats bar will stay up longer!

Oh and there should be the stadium announcer before and during the matches. He could READ OUT THE PLAYERS FOR BOTH TEAMS GREETED TO CHEERS from the crowd. Also for substitutions he should say something like "SUBSTITION FOR CHELSEA, GIANFRANCO ZOLA FOR EIDUR GUDJOHNSEN" and when a goal is scored he should say something like "GOAL FOR ARSENAL, NUMBER 14 THEIRY HENRY!!!". This would add more passion and feeling to the game so PLEASE, PLEASE put this in!

I know ive posted this in other threads as well but dont u think it would be a great idea if EA included this in fifa 2004!
