I wasn't going to post anything in here but having recently had a go on FIFA2003 as a PES fan I thought I'd give my two'penneth worth.
I went to visit a mate who had FIFA2003 on his X-Box. It was visually impressive, although I thought there was very little to seperate the two games on the visual side. I thought the faces in PES looked more realistic on many an occasion because the FIFA players all seemed to be muscle bound beefcake types.
But the gameplay is where it matters. So as not to build up the hopes of FIFA maniacs I'll tell you what I think now and that is that PES wipes the floor with FIFA. FIFA's great for an arcadey fix of football after a few drinks with your mates but it comes nowhere near the tension that you get from playing out a hard-earned 1-1 draw against a mate on PES.
I'd never touched FIFA2003 before. The two friends I was playing against had played the game for a few months now. It took me a moment to get used to the controls because they were quite similar to PES. But in using some PES training, ie. moving the ball around from player to player quickly without resorting to crazy dribbles and long balls, as well as some well timed standing tackles (positioning, it's all about positioning) I managed to win my first game 5-0. Yes that five goals to nil against my mate who's game it was. The only thing that stopped it being more was the fact that it took me half the game to learn how to shoot because the shots ratio was 30+ shots from me to about 3 for him.
Second game I played against my other mate. That ended up being 5-1 in my favour. At the end of the night I'd managed to pick up FIFA for the first time and go through about 5-10 games undefeated (I'd had a few drinks by then so I couldn't give anyone an accurate estimation to how many games I'd played).
I'd say, therefore, that while I did enjoy playing FIFA against some friends (I'd imagine that the computer would pose less of a challenge to human controlled players who'd played it for a few months) it doesn't match PES in any way, shape, or form.
I would be interested to see the results of a tournament which mixed PES and FIFA players playing both games.
Disclaimer: in saying this I'm not bagging anyone who'd say they prefer FIFA, it's all a matter of opinion.
