This little blurb in the L.A. Times sports section, February 14: "The Chicago Fire was beaten, 2-1, by the U.S. under-17 men's national team in Bradenton, Fla., with 13-year old Freddy Adu scoring one goal and assisting on the other for Coach John Ellinger's U-17 side."

Let's reflect on that for a second, a 13 year old boy scored a goal and got an assist playing with a teenage squad against a professional men's team.

My daughter is 13 and she can't get her clothes into the hamper.

That can either be alarming or it could be good concerning the future of US soccer. Alarming because it goes to show the poor quality of the MLS...
I really do think that this league is crap and they should make it better by adding more clubs and a second division so teams could relegate and promote. I bet then you wouldn't see no 13 yearold boy score against a men's team.

I dont know the history of soccer...err football too well, so can someone tell me when the last time a club offered a contract worth $500,000 to a 12 year old kid?(the club in this case being inter milan, and the boy being ADU)

Oh yeah, adding more teams to mls is not gonna add quality to the league.Example; last year 2 teams are folded so there is only 10 teams left. This resulted in one of the best seasons in the history of the league. Pro/rel will not help until the nation comes up with a better player development system. You can have all the pro/rel you want but those crappy college soccer kids playing pro ball just wont cut it.Blah blah blah...

MLS: I LIKE IT I LOVE IT I WANT SOME MORE OF IT

I read the story about Freddy Adu to my wife and she wondered whether he really is 13. Like those baseball players from the Domican Republic who turn out to be five years older than they claimed to be.

Adu is 13, I read an article about him in SI. He was the leading scorer in the U 17 World Championships (5 goals i think). It said that he could start up front for ant MLS team, and produce pretty well. Bruce Arena also said that he is already up there with the Mathises and Donovans of American soccer...it's just amazing. A couple years ago man u bought the rights for some kid in maryland...anyone remember who that was??

FREDDY ADU IS NOT 13 YEARS OLD!

I'd say he's at least 18.

Kind of odd, his mother turning down a contract from Inter Milan, isn't it? It's because Inter would have eventually found out he's not the age he claims.

yeah exactly.... and if he starts playing regularly for the MLS for a few years, he'd be a mature looking 18 year old ( 18 on paper and 23 in reality) ...but by then no one would bother as some 18 year olds these days look much older...

if he is 13, im 10 years old :|

well...the thing is he's Western African, forgot country, but he is an american citizen. Citizens here in the states have things called...i'm blankin on the...oh yea...BIRTH CERTIFICATES. they tell exactly how old someone is. even the day and time they were born! respectable, established news sources like SI and LA Times wouldn't lie about the kids age. He also wouldnt still be in middle school...

The problem is that he was born in, I think was Nigeria, and the record keeping in Africa leaves a little to be desired. When his mother came to the States, there was no reason for her to make up a later date for her son's birth, unless she was receiving public benefits while her children are minors.

Baseball players from the Domican have been forging birth certificates for years in order to get signed by major league clubs.

I've coached 13 year old boys and you find quite a few who are physically mature. But I haven't seen one who couldn't be "man-handled" by a skilled adult (keep you dirty thoughts to yourselves).

He's from Ghana, and I agree.
