I've just recently discovered this website and it really looks to me to be the future of online football/social networking.
If you visit the website then you'll see a video which shows what this website is all about much better than I can describe with words but I will try.
It is kind of like real time fantasy football where you setup a match between your friends/strangers before one of the preselected games is played live. You then select 3 players from either of the two teams involved. Then as the match kicks of and is played points are awarded and taken away from the players depending on the actions in the game. You are given the points from the players that you selected before the match. During the match you can also make up to 3 substitutions in case you lose faith in your selection.

The only downside I can see to this so far is the amount of matches you can play to is quite limited being only games involving English teams but as it is still beta this could be changed in the future.
Don't know if this has been discussed before but I'm pretty excited to try this out as it seems like such an excellent idea. Next match to be played is Liverpool - Arsenal this coming Sunday.
