Football Manager 2006 First Impressions

Senior Squad
I won't comment too much until I play the game more, but first impressions:

- Injuries, injuries, injuries.
- Players getting tired very easily and many of my players never reach 100% condition. Whether or not it's because I haven't messed with training much yet, I am unsure.
- Some teams strangely score at will. I was playing against Ascoli and their no-name striker ran rampant bagging a hat trick against Cannavaro and Thuram. Fiorentina does the same thing.
- Maybe it's because it was in the first summer, but to sign a player takes an arm and a leg. Don't get me wrong, I think in years past it has been way too easy to buy stars, but I was bidding on out-of-favor players mostly. Most players I bid on became unsettled and publicly asked the club to accept, but no dice.
- I don't really like the tactical side of the game, but after the golden age of CM 01/02, it has never really been the same.

Unfortunately, I believe FM is becoming the only other game beside FIFA that progressively gets worse every year.

Injuries: same as last year, training is the key. If you have a crap coach, and no room for improvement, you're screwed when you put your training over light.

Tiredness: same as last year, pre-season training is the key. Same as above, you'll have a hard time getting your players match fit with a crap coach, though it's easier to achieve than avoiding too many injuries.

Scorelines: this is strange indeed. Almost as if smaller teams have no fear to lose, and the bigger ones always are afraid of not winning. Might be due to tactics, but I wonder how.

Players: can't comment, still playing with VVV, now 5 matches into the season :(

Tactics: I think it's getting more and more realistic, but it has been lacking in many fields indeed. One thing I miss is I'd like to be able to give my players different scenarios to act out in different situations, without having to alter my base tactic five times in a match, but I'm afraid that's not going to be implemented anytime soon.

The last point is a definite 'not true', there is also FIFA Manager. The research in particular is showing signs of deterioration. I guess the researchers all have 9-to-5 jobs now.

usually you going to struggle against weaker team in second half. they really give you a hard time instead of comfortably win :S

Starting XI
Using Ruud way... :jap:

Injuries: Not really. Lots of injuries for me. Liedson is just injured for 2 months in a crucial part of the championship, in the semi of the cup and 1/8 of the Uefa Cup. Luis Loureiro is out for 4 months...and every week I get one or another with sickness...

Tiredness: Yup, good pre-season please. And those tired players...you better give them 1/2 rest day after an important game...I do that...and works nice.

Scorelines: I find out that it is very much harder to win. Those smaller teams really come to your stadium to defend, and somehow score a goal. And you are screwed. I have never lost in the Championship...but I do remember that I made a great game against a team from Turkey in the CL, I owned them. They shot once, scored once. I shot lots...and scored once...this always happens in the last editions, but this times it is more frequent.

Players: They seem more inteligent, at least in the 2D match...when you say to him some instructions, before or even during the game...they really do it! I really love it. I remember saying to Edson to shoot more...and after 5 minutes he scored an awesome goal.

Tactics: Ouch...I am currently in a 4-3-3 attacking formation...but in hard games like "Derbys" or CL matches away I put 4-5-1...And using 4-3-3 in a game versus a weak team, the next game vs. a weaker team the tactic may not work anymore...you really have to say well the instructions...one left-back attacking more than he should can cost you a lot this time.

I don't think there is deterioration in the research team. The players are where they should and their stats are very real compared to last season. (Last season Douala with 14 pace...LOLED). There may be some errors...but nothing so far for me.

This is what I think of the game so far...

anyone noticed the shadows of the ball? They're so unrealistic it's funny (H) (Y)

Also, the tutorial states the Bosman ruling was named after John Bosman, when in fact, it's named after the Belgian player Alain Bosman...
