First time shot

Is there a particular technique required in getting your strikers to hit a shot first time instead of this annoying habit they all seem to have of wanting to control the ball first , then turn and shoot by which time AI defence has long since cleared the ball?

I've only once got an attacker to clip a cross into the next. There must be more to it than timing as I've tried hitting the shoot button at all possible moments.

I've noticed that your defenders seem more than able to hoof a perfect long clearance from the 18 yard box on the first time volley, no matter which player and how poor his stats. But I've got Michael Owen playing up front (European footballer of the year, no less) and every low cross or pass into the box and he always sees fit to do this stupid little "controlling the ball" animation thing rather than sticking a foot out and firing a glancing shot.

btw, has anyway ever seen a defender, when clearing a high cross-ball, mis-kick it high above his head?

Also, ever noticed how the pass button sometimes doesn't do anything..I'm noticing it more and more where when I press X, particularly when I've got the ball in midfield, nothing happens, so I furiosuly press X a few times and then an AI defender comes in and steals the ball. I know there is often a short delay between pressing X and your player steading himself to pass the ball but this is ridiculous.

It works well for me. I think you must imagine yourself in the position of the shooter: if you don't stand correctly with your body, you cant shoot it first time into the net, so as the ball is on his way towards the shooter, try to let the player face towards the goal, so move his body so, that he only has to shoot to score.
This way it must work...
If the player is hindered by a defender and you can't move his body right, you can't score it first time...

On a high ball, you usually score by headers, but if the ball has dipped enough, you can volley it in, or half-volley it in when the ball is almost behind him.
Volleying depends on how high the ball is when it reach the player. Mostly the ball is at knee-height....

No , you mean a bicycle kick - mis-hit?

Yes, that's because you try to send a pass to a player you can't reach at that moment, for instance because a defender is in his way, so even if that should have worked you should have lost posession anyway
Maybe you say that sometimes you passed but the ball was still intercepted, but that's different. I think the CPU looks if your pass is succesfully on the moment you attempt to send it. When there is a defender in the way, it doesn't pass. In the case of an intercepted pass, the defender was not between you and the player you like to pass to YET.

thanks Han, I know what you are saying about making sure your attacker is facing the right way before he shoots and I already was trying this but I guess I need to practise harder.

The passing thing is not what you say though. The typical situation is that I am in plenty of space running through midfield but approaching an AI midfielder(about 5 yards gap). I notice Piborsky starting to make a run down the wing so I press X and try to pass towards him, but nothing happens...I press X again, still nothing, everntually the AI defender has closed the gap and gets the ball.

At first I honestly thought my X button was faulty so changed controllers but the same thing happens on my other controller (the X button works fine on all other games). It's strange because I never noticed it for the first couple of weeks playing but now it seems to happen quite a lot, maybe 2 or 3 times some matches. But I gradually start to notice some other glitches the more I play.

I also find more good things the more I play.


Has anyone sussed out how to effectively defend corners? It seems to me to be more luck than judgement. I can usually put in a good challenge to the cross about 75% of the time but there are times when the AI team just takes a corner straight to the attackers head and goal!!. Sure, in reality that happens sometimes but it just feels too much like a scripted goal...I may as well have put the controller down and wacthed it happen as there appears to be nothing you can do to stop some corners resulting in a goal.

There are times when the AI team is losing 1-0 with 5 minutes to go and decides to get a corner by playing a long ball forward and then having my guy go on one of those runs chasing a ball and then touching it out of play for a corner but I cannot control him to stop him doing it. Having basically awarded itself a corner out of nothing, it then proceeds to score direct from the corner with one of those indefensible routines. I have flashes of FIFA and it's ridiculous 45 yard, top-corner shots at times like that.

What I do is this:
1. I man-mark his attackers, and sometimes his OH
2. I use L1 to get to the aimed player
For the last point I have to say that at the start of the corner your selected player is closest to the corner-taker and you have to wait if it is not a short corner, in which case you must NOT press L1, because the right player is already selected.
In all other situations, press L1 when the ball is in the air and you clear the ball 9 out of 10 times, by heading or volleying it.
In that 1 out of 10 -situation, where he still scores, he aimes for a player (mostly a defender) who stands back somewhere, unmarked. Take care for this! After pressing L1, you still are able to get to him, pressing R2 and the direction button towards him, but it is difficult.

sometimes (very rarely, for me once in 10 matches) the player does not react when you press the x button and Han actually gave the right answer. also, when i press x a second time in this situation (about half a second later) the player passes.
i have scored a lot of goals by first time shots.

do you talk about PES or Pro Evolution 2?
I talk about PES.

i don't get your problems anyway i'm playing on level 5 and i win about 50% of the matches.
maybe you need more practise???
