FIFA05 non biased Review

Right lets get the first thing out of the way. I Love Winning Eleven or PES as its called in the UK, and i have been happily playing WE8 since its japanese release date and its awesome, but every year i do look forward with hope for EA's offering as im happy to have an abundance of footy titles to play.

My thoughts on 05 are this - i think Danny Isaac should take a step back or step down, he hasnt managed to nail the gameplay yet and im not sure he ever will. When you base a Football game around marketing features your on to a loser - as most of your development time is taken up on the gimmicks, for instance the first touch system - which works really well mind and is a great addition over 04's effort - should be in the game as standard, its so fundemental to the game, yet its taken them how many versions to implement?

After a day or two of solid play the trouble with fifa is it loses its appeal alltwo quickly, its a game designed to look good but it doesnt allow yourself to express yourself on the pitch. I scored a wonderful goal with Vieri of Inter - i did a little dummy shot then curled it beyond the keeper - but it didnt feel like i had done it. Isaac and his boys have now taken the backward step of scripting some shots in the box and just outside - you can spot this by the way the shots curl around the keeper and its very disappointing.

The fifa team still also hasnt got the mechanics right for team play, you have no freedom of passing and the players seem a little rigid also the most annoying factor is your back four and midfield because they dont move in tandem - they never support the attack and theres hardly anyone in the box. Which brinks me to corners and freekicks, the freekicks are ok except for wehn you get a freekick by the corner flag and the only option available is to shoot which is ridiculous. The corners are terrible because you cant fire in a corner and attack the ball, your three options allow little maneouvering and in fact the opposition keeper claims it the majority of the time.

The crossing model has been tweaked again - i thought they had began to sort this in euro 2004 where on many occasions you could whip in a cross but that seems to have been eliminated for a more lobbed up and down cross - double tapping the cross never beats the first man.

There are plus points though, liscenses are thee, the graphics are quite good, the stadiums are nice too, but the tactics need an overhaul theres no scope for positioning, man marking or compiling your own formations.

So to be fair fifa 05 is fifa 04 with tacked on bits which to me is a year of wasted opportunity by ea again - they need to pull the development out of North America - sorry guys its just not your main sport and it shows, its too pretty to play, theres no grit - which is probably why Madden and co do so well as they are their national sports, give it to a european developer.

Winning eleven 8/Pes 4 is the game of complete choice, you guys who love fifa - dont be scared of picking up pes its much much better than pes 3 which incidentally i never liked, try it and you will love it.

cheers

I do agree that maybe its time for someone else to be given the chance to make a FIFA game. I would like too see the task be given to some japanese developers. it seems like danny and his team are never gonna get it right.

they leave out the basic fundamentals every year. FIFA always sells by the bucket loads though. the big boys up at EA HQ's are always gonna be happy as long as sales are booming!!

Lets get one thing straight CHILDREN.

I like footy games period. I like different games, i like choice. To date i own a few of the old winning eleven series, Football Kingdom and Fifa 2005, in the past i've owned and played TIF and Club Football.

Just because my review isnt favourable doesnt mean im biased, i want a decent footy games, i aint gonna pretend FIFA is a world beater, because it isnt and in my view all im saying is to try PES4/WE8 because i think theres a few in here that cant or wont face switching titles and its a damn shame because you are missing out.

FIFA has been poorly produced for years on end now and they still cant get it right. The first poster is correct - You and me will suffer because we still buy FIFA and the EA bosses are happy with that so they dont feel the need to fix the numerous problems that exist. If everyone stopped buying it or the sales suffered i bet you EA would drastically alter the game as it is it is just FIFA04 with bits added.

sorry to say.

What really frustrates me is that stuff like A.I tactical substitutions, Human tactical control, huge non scripted gameplay is not something which is revolutionary. The Fifa team have heard these complaints for the last few years.

why do they not fix them? now is it because they choose not too or is it they are not capable of doing so?

Fifa definately needs to go to a new developer. One that's not too lazy to give their fans every option possible to optimize their game. Sh*t, you can't even choose if you want to shoot or pass in freekicks.:kader:

well maybe im the only one here...but when i buy a sports video game, i buy it because i want to play as my favorite sports stars...because i dont have their talent and cant score pretty goals like they can. all that saying....i have ALWAYS been turned off to PES because of the licensing. i bought PES 3, and popped it in my ps2, SOOOO excited because this was the rumored "best soccer game ever", and i was all pumped up, only to find that im playing with teams with guys like Bob Smith, etc. WTF?? having this game without the licenses, is like paying to see Rumble in the Bronx with Carlos*ie Chan, only to be totally appauled, that it was dubbed over and that it was originally in japanese. its like "oh man, so much potential to be cool, but now it sucks" thats how i felt with PES. i dont want to play with the "red and blue team" when its really supposed to be "Barcelona". i will never buy their games if i have to edit the player names and team names just so i can decipher who is who. i'm sorry, but i thought one of the must-haves in a sports game was that it was supposed to reproduce the look/feel/play of real sports you see on tv. if i wanted to play a game with no licensing, ill just go back to my atari 2600 and play the Soccer game, at least then i wont expect team names and colors.

PES4 has the licensing for the Spanish, Italian and Dutch league. That means accurate stadiums, kits and players...

I guess because year on year people just keep coming on back to it despite the apparrent lack of real development put in to the game. Therefore they (EA) just put their money into getting all the franchise side if it up to scratch at the expense of good game play! If it ain't broke don't fix it or in their case if it moves enough units without major changes why fix it! I'm a hypocrite. I see this and yet I still go and buy the game.....WHY? Because it has all the names and leagues and I can (eventually) play as my beloved Chelsea in the Premier League, not some made up league as in PES but the real thing! I will still buy PES4 when it comes out because of the gameplay but while EA has the market in real names and teams Fifa will hold my attention.
For all the bods that frequent these forums there are thousands more out there that don't get to stuck up on the ins and outs of gameplay and A.I. They just want the latest, Drogba, Reyes, Rooney etc...all playing for the right side......no downloads, no patches no editing!
They sit in their bedrooms, usually kids with their mates having persuaded their parents to part with their dosh, and go for it with their favourite teams/players. Sexy Football!!!
So realistically there is nothing we can do. While the ordinary punter lays out his money there are mugs like me who can see the shortcomings and still lay out their money!
Me, I'll keep playing it and when PES4 comes out it will wear out my new XBOX ( which I bought for PES4) until I fancy taking Chelski to the top of the Premier League again!

Colin (Cynical and hypocritical)!!
