Timing bad for under-20 soccer

Reports from Brazil suggest that Joao Havelange, honorary president of the Federation of International Football Association and former long-time president of FIFA, is quietly working behind the scenes to arrange a postponement of the under-20 World Cup scheduled for six Canadian cities this summer, including Toronto's new BMO Stadium at the CNE.

Havelange apparently is concerned that the July dates conflict with not only the July 8 Toronto Grand Prix, but the Pan American Games scheduled for Rio de Janeiro, as well.

Havelange is worried that most countries would send their most talented young players to the under-20s and use lesser talents for the Pan Ams.

Bruce Thomas, a prominent Toronto lawyer and chairman of the under-20 event, also is concerned, but more specifically with the auto race.

"How can our teams and fans get to the stadium when the CNE's race track with its concrete barriers will make access to the stadium almost impossible?" he said. "It would be better if Mr. Havelange could convince FIFA that the under-20 World Cup should be postponed either to August before the CNE opens, or to September, after the CNE closes."

Couldn't someone in the local organizing committee have raised this issue when the championship was first awarded to Canada and games were scheduled in Toronto? After all, it's not like this is the first time that the Grand Prix has been held in July.

What a potential mess now...

Also the heat in July in Canada is brutal...for many years we have seen 35 and 40 + degree temperatures.

they better not f*ck with the schedule. Selfish c*nts. There's already thousands of people like me with tickets ready and summer plans organized just so we can witness some good soccer in this country.

The Molson Indy is what should get booted. It has become a complete bore watching the field follow the pole sitter to the finish line on a stupid course that is almost impossible to pass on.

You folks at Canada should be quite angry at Havelange too - both tournaments were scheduled for quite a long while, and now is a rather untimely moment to complain...

Nearly two years on from their glorious victory at the FIFA U-17 World Championship Peru 2005, Mexico's golden generation of talented youngsters have their sights set on an even greater challenge: the FIFA U-20 World Cup Canada 2007. However, before they are able to prove their international mettle on Canadian soil, the young Tricolores must overcome a host of obstacles along the way. The first of these comes in the form of a qualifying group fraught with potential pitfalls. Perhaps the biggest threat is offered by Costa Rica, who pushed El Tri all the way in Peru two years ago. Nor must we forget a Jamaica side packed with power and pace, or the unknown quantity that is St. Kitts and Nevis.

Portuguese football is very much in vogue right now. Deco confidently pulls the strings in the midfield for Barcelona, last season's UEFA Champions League winners. Cristiano Ronaldo continues to enrapture fans of the Manchester United with his wing wizardry, and Jose Mourinho remains a captivating figure at the helm of Chelsea.

As for the national team, the Selecção das Quinas claimed the scalp of Dunga's Brazil only last week, once more rousing expectations among fans still buzzing from the team's highly commendable fourth-place finish at the 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany™.

brazil, they have a pretty solid squad with tremendous talents , and to add to that i would imagine anderson would have recover from his injury to play the WC.

i wanna say mexico too, but i know things are completly diferent from what was the sub 17 WC , but if they play with the same heart they did then i would imagine seeing them at least in semis, at least! lol.

I dont know how far Mexico can get, i dont really know the players except for Giovanni, Vela, Villaluz and Araujo (which are really great players) the rest are totally unkown for me, and dont know if the are talented enough to win this.

Giovanni-Villaluz-Vela, sounds like a powerfull and skilled attack, lets see if they are in their best form.

well its basicly the same squad, in the qualifiers they are playing with the exact same lineup they played the WC 17 except for the GK that was arias, but chucho is going for this kid named blanco in gk spot , which he has looked pretty solid. (Y)
