Empires always fade away. And then the next empire always gets to harp on about how all the previous empires were evil. I doubt any of us will be alive to see the Chinese (or whoever) in turn ignoring their own criminal activities and ranting on about how the USA committed genocide in North America and laid waste to progressive political movements and cultures throughout the world (in the same way that Americans today talk about the atrocities of British imperialism). As a Briton who has to live within the American empire I take comfort in the fact that this empire too will crumble. I appreciate the irony, and the blindness that always comes with the imperialist urge.
