FIFA 2003: What We Know
Thursday, July 25, 2002, the first FIFA 2003 screenshots hit the internet. They spread like a wild fire and before we know it, the FIFA fanatics are once again thrown into their yearly routine of anxiously waiting and wanting to find out everything they can about EA's latest FIFA installment.

Later that day, the FIFA 2003 Factsheet becomes available, and for the first time the public gets a small briefing as to what they can expect from FIFA 2003.

Let's take a look at some of the major talking points to come out of the Fact Sheet.

All NEW Game Engine and Ball Control
The Fact Sheet states: "FIFA Football 2003 provides an immersive, authentic experience driven by an ALL NEW game engine."

"A fundamental change in the control of the ball including shooting, dribbling, and passing results in more natural gameplay - with deflections, missed headers and scrambled goals reflecting the real nature of football."

Even after completely re-inventing the FIFA game engine for 2002, EA have taken the bold move and once again completely re-made the game engine. Most significantly, the ball physics have been completely re-done from scratch. For the first time in FIFA history, the ball will no longer stick to the player's feet. When a player takes off on a sprint down the sideline, the ball will be pushed out in front of him, and depending on the player's skill level, the ball will be quite hard to control.

Significant AI Improvements and Player Likeness
The Fact Sheet states: "FIFA Football 2003 introduces a completely re-worked AI engine that focuses on three new enhancements; team play, team tactics and real player attributes. Use the advantage of playing as a team to break down the opposition with precision passing and quality finishing. Face the onslaught of an opposing team 1-0 down in the 80th minute as they throw all their players upfront."

If EA can really live up to what they claim in the paragraph above, FIFA 2003 will surely be a game to remember. FIFA 2003 players will be more aware of what is going on around them. If the computer scores a late goal to take the lead, expect to see all but one of your opposition players dropping back and doing whatever they can to defend their lead.

Players are now going pocess a range of charateristic traits and skills, making the top players stand out like they do in real life. Expect to see Raul kissing his gold ring when scoring a goal, and David Beckham and Roberto Carlos powering in awesome long range free kicks, complete with their own individual shooting styles.

Club Championship Mode
The Fact Sheet States: "Experience total immersion and ultimate competition with 18 of the greatest European teams. Feel the intense big match atmosphere with all the star players, real stadia, real stats and your favorite club specific crowd chants."

The 18 teams featured in the Club Champion Mode are going to be the most realistic FIFA teams EA have ever created. Everything, from each player's face and star players playing characteristics, to each club's official stadium and team chants will be found in this mode. It is safe to say that the days of just 5 generic stadiums in FIFA games are well and truely over. Expect to see as many as 20 real life stadiums in FIFA 2003.

So far EA are keeping tight lipped about the other new features in FIFA 2003. The above are obviously the most significant new additions and changes, however you can be assured that EA still have a number of suprises up their sleeve. Expect to see plenty more new screenshots, more news on the other new features, and perhaps even a movie or two in the coming weeks.

For now though read the full Fact Sheet and check out the seven PS2 screenshots that have so far been released. Pay special attention to the first shot. Take a look in the grandstand and you'll be able to see the "away section" filled with Real Madrid fans and surrounded by marshalls. Wow... another new feature!
