Fear and Loathing in Thailand

Been to Thailand, loved it. I stayed at the Coral bungalows, which is on the sunset side of Had Rin on Koh Phan Gan, so we had beautiful views in the evenings. Try and find somewhere a bit further out from the town to stay if you can because it tends to be overun with revellers further in, which can get annoying when you just want to relax in the evening rather than hear drunken singing in the early hours (the place I stayed was 5 minutes away from the town, so it was quiet but near enough to walk to the town).

The Full Moon party was a bit of a disappointment. The beach was packed out but there wasn't much of an atmosphere...think part of it is that it's over-hyped, so when you actually experience it seems a bit of a let down.

Chaweng, which is on the east coast of Koh Samui is heaving, full of Western influences like Burger King, McDonalds, Starbucks etc, so avoid if you're after a more "authentic" experience of Thailand.

The one place I'd definitely recommend going to is Anthong National Marine Park in Koh Samui. You get there by speedboat, which is pretty cool and can go snorkelling, kayaking around the islands and there are plenty of nice small beaches for picnics. The guides will try to pimp one of the local girls...GUARANTEED :D

Oh BTW, most of the locals don't speak English but around the tourist areas, you'll be fine. Anyway, I found hand signals tended to get the message across when comminication proved to be a problem.
Haha thanks for the advice man (Y) This Full Moon Party is a special anniversary one, and it goes on over three nights, so hopefully it wont be so much of a disappointment. I dont know where we'll be heading afterwards, I always thought Koh Samui was to be avoided but maybe I'll be able to check out the Marine Park briefly.

How expensive is it over there? I have been hoping that it's like Kenya, where $10 will get you a hotel room for the night, $5 a good meal etc, but the country seems much more developed than I thought it was so maybe this isnt the case?

Also, what did you reckon to Bangkok? Is it worth spending some time in, or a bit of a hole as some people seem to suggest?

With regards to prostitutes, I have heard they are extremely cheap and available en masse, so I'm thinking of hiring a fifty or so and have them reinact my favourite historical battles (H)

If you're in Bangkok, you'll definitely see at least a few. From the back some of them really look quite stunning. :(

"A lot of people go to Bangkok to do just that"

Cost of accomodation can vary according to the type...the Coral bungalows, the place I stayed at in Koh Phangan cost 1000 baht/night per person (each bungalow sleeps two), whilst the hotel I stayed at Koh Samui cost £150/night but it was amazing. Obviously, there are the hostels if you want somewhere really cheap but I'm not sure what the facilities are like.

For cheap food, there are the food stalls on the street, which sell stuff like pork and rice for around 20-30 baht but obviously be careful of dodgy hygeine standards. In a fairly nice restaurant, you can expect to pay around 100-200 baht per head...hotel restaurants are more expensive though. As for booze, the cheapest place are the local supermarkets with all the bars and restaurants obviously charging more; we used to take wine to restaurants and pay a corking fee.

Bangkok is generally as bad as people say but there are some beautiful areas like the temples, so it's worth spending a day or two exploring.

EDIT: As for the local women of the night, I can't comment because I went with the other half...schoolboy error :(

I'd be disappointed if Sir_Didier_Drogba isn't original enough to get infected with something more innovative.

Hmm...i really dont know if this is a rumour, but i have heard that prostitutes over there have certificates indicating their HIV status and other things, and prostitution is pretty much legal.

Or was i too drunk to take all that as triue?

Koh Phangan was amazing, only thing is those mushroom shakes are much more intense than they look, amazing 6 hour trip followed by 2 hrs trying to work out what is reality, gorgeous island girls, cheap liquor, M150 (red bull but with all the chemicals that are illegal in the west), banana skin blunts which blow your head off (Y)(Y)(Y)

In Cambodia now, basically like the wild west, totally lawless, everyone tries to sell you drugs, general air of lethargy, way too many joints but yet to try opium, no police anywhere, tomorrow we go to army barracks and bribe soldiers to let us fire machine guns. Posters everywhere about how child sex is a crime, recent crackdown, 10 yrs ago there was a brothel here called Kiddies Corner :p

Was in Bangkok yesterday where I ordered a very expensive tailor made suit that I cant afford, also drank far too many martinis and got called a ladyboy by a random taxi driver, saw a fat american dude with his thai boy entourage. Got very drunk and started playing connect four with Wong, lost 75-10.

LONG LIVE THE KING

Hehe sorry :p

If ever you want to see the dregs, dropouts and ****ups of western society, go to Cambodia man, it's insane. The whole country is basically the Wild West, totally lawless. You can go down to the military barracks and bribe the soldiers to let you play with AKs and live ammunition, and trust me, no drug can match the rush of firing one of those mother****ers. You can even pay to shoot animals and blow up cows if you want to (I didnt). It's the only country in the world where I've just been able to roll up a joint in any bar and smoke it with my lunch or afternoon martinis. Also there is opium readily available and pills too if you're into that. The girls are really hot and love white guys, though there are alot of hookers to watch out for, it's not like Thailand where the hookers cater almost exclusively for the locals. Rooms for $2 a night, cigarettes for pennies, decent food, lots of women and drugs and a derranged disregard for the law and for basic health and safety - an amazing country.

I'm back in Bangkok now (picked up my tailor made suit :jap:) and I fly back to England tomorrow which is a bitch as I've had a great time, will say more later I guess, am getting hungry...

Sounds pretty incredible. Although I never really liked opium. Made me sleepy and on the verge of throwing up. Pills on the other hand, were always fantastic. Either way, I'm glad that I don't do any of that anymore. Just pour me a Jager (I'm such an alky i'll drink it straight now. at least it's not straight vodka i guess), or a double red bull and vodka and I'm fine. Never really like weed either. And I wouldn't **** a kid or blow up a cow. So I guess Cambodia isn't for me. My people also napalmed the **** out of that country, so I'd probably have to speak with a cockney accent.
