Japanese football animes were pretty big back in the 80's, depending on which part of the world you lived in. I wasn't around when they first came out but i caught most of the reruns later on in the 90's, shows like Captain Tsubasa and Kickers were very popular even then. They had all these crazy moves which I kept trying to copy but could never pull off. I actually used to think that if you hit the ball hard enough you could make it flatten and spin like a frisbee and then rip through the net. If you did watch any of the cartoons before these vids will sure bring back some cool memories. :rockman:

The question should be, "who didn't watch them?"..
I remember how it took one whole episode for him to take that final shot that'll win the match and how the ball defied all the possible laws of physics :p

I grew up watching Captain Tsubasa. O the memories.

That overhead kick goal against the Germans in the World Youth Cup. His partnership with left-footed midfield genius Tai Loi. Genius!

Hyuga was my favorite character though. He was the striker with the Tiger Shot. Played well for Juve. heh.

I like how the author adds in real life players to make the comic even more interesting. I liked the bit where Rivaldo and Tsubasa competed for the same position in Barca.

Thuram is one of the many other players that were included. I'm sure Davids was in the comic. Not sure about Cannavaro.

Hate all Japanimation cartoons.

EDIT: Except for Battle of the Planets. And Spaceketeers. All of Force 5 I guess.

But all the newer ones suck.

Dragonball Z probably hammered the nail in the coffin for my breif liking of Japanese cartoons. The fact that the first big battle took 3 months to even get close to concluding kinda did it.

Coupled with the fact that I'd watch the late night ones on the Sci-Fi channel to realise it was just a way around TV porn rules.

Hang on a minute. For a Germany v Japan game, I see no nationalised Brazilians or players of Ghanain descent. Racists!

Force 5 in the early 80s was what I watched every day. Voltron and all that stuff.

But honestly, who the hell wants to watch cartoon, fake football? I guess that explains the animal-head hair in PES. :kader:

Tsubasa kicks f'cking ass (H)
10 years ago or so when it was on portuguese TV I couldn' miss one single episode...only problem was that they took a whole episode to reach from end to end, which kind of sucked but hey it was a way of putting kids anxiously waiting for next week's show...

Loved it, one of my biggest TV addictions ever (Y)

i love classic anime...voltes-v, macross/robotech, gundam, dbz, etc...did watch tsubasa but didnt follow it faithfully...i really feel bad as to how anime nowadays are kinda more concentrated on the marketing side like selling toys (ie: pokemon and the like) instead of tellin good action stories... It was cool, but far too unrealistic. Making it extremely tedious and unbearable at the time. Could have been so much more.

I don't think there's been a decent fictional football show. Ever.

Dream Team
"The team bus has crashed? Killing everybody instantly? OH NOES! And someone's banging the manager!"

Jossies Giants
"We're crap, but here's a guest appearance by Bryan Robson, to make us instantly better."

The Hurricanes
"Nobody score a hat-trick until we all learn a life-changing lesson."

All in the Game
"I'm Ray Winston. Fack, fack, fack. Cant, cant cant! Bung."

GOAL!
"Sawwcer! Girls, goals, sex, drugs. All the things you associate with football with as little action as possible!"
Do another run of Premier Passions, man.

GOAL! was ok actually...but i realy liked MEAN MACHINE with vinnie jones...that was just such a sweet movie...of course years later, america would make its own version of it, but instead of football, they made it into american football and dubbed it The Longest Yard...but they were still called mean machine... :nape:

This site has all the characters and story lines and everything.

Man I used to watch this stuff a lot when I was like 8 to 10. Looking at it now, it looks pretty cheesy, but back then it was the best. Brings back memories.

All those robot animes look very similar, but Grandizer would have to be the best of the bunch by far, i still have some of the grandizer comics stacked away somewhere.

As for voltron, that was the cartoon were all the lions would join up and form a robot right? i always wanted to get my hands on one of those voltron toys and see how the lion pieces transformed and fit together. He had a pretty cool looking sword, but i reckon grandizer could still lay the smack down on voltron's sorry ass any day.

THIS pretty much sums up how every episode of Voltron went. :-paul:

Haha, yeah its kinda wierd how he'd dribble his way past 10 players then just as he's about to take a shot at goal he stops and starts having these flashbacks of all sorts of irrelevant things from back in his childhood, like his first day at school and how his mum used to pack his lunch. And then they'd have to show the reactions of half the people in the crowd and what they're thinking too.

Still Captain Tsubasa was great, but Kickers was probably my favourite, dunno maybe because i saw that first.

But its funny when your watching one of the translated versions of captain Tsubasa, German, Italian, Arab or whatever, and they'd be pretending like he's one of their own. But then you'd wonder why he's running around with a couple of Japanese flags on his shirt. :brow:
