European superleagues

What if all of the European leagues were consolidated? The format would just be like football in a single country, with a premier league and then divisions below that with teams getting relegated and promoted. All of the teams in Europe could be ranked according to how good they are and placed in leagues. The European Premiership League would be the top 20 teams, the European Division One would be the teams ranked 21-40, ED2 would be 41-60, etc. And of course at the end of each year, 3 teams are relegated and promoted. At the very beginning, teams might grumble about what league they are placed in, but with the whole relegation and promotion system, teams that deserve to be in a higher league will go up, teams that should be in a lower league should go down. I think the top league would like something like this (the teams in no particular order except for what league they came from, I did this so it would be easier)

AC Milan
Roma
Juventus
Inter Milan
Arsenal
Chelsea
Machester United
Liverpool
Valencia
Barcelona
Real Madrid
Deportivo
Munchen (sorry my keyboard doesn't have an umlaut)
Bremen
Lyon
Monaco
Porto
Ajax
Celtic
Anderlecht

IMO those are the top twenty teams in Europe, not in order. There are a variety of leagues represented, I didn't do this just to please everyone, I do think those are the top 20 teams in Europe. Of course there are some that were left out that arguably should have been in there, some would argue that Parma, Stuttgart, PSG, Leverkusen, or Galatasaray are better than maybe Celtic or Anderlecht, but I think that Celtic and Anderlecht are just a little bit better than all of those teams.

The reason all the leagues should be together is it is silly to have all of these different leagues in Europe when there could be one system. It would be way more efficient. And most of all it would be the best way to determine the best team in Europe. IMO league play is a better indicator than Champions League, Champions League is a tournament and upsets do happen, but in league play the top team got there because they had the best performance over 38 games, not just a few rounds of a tournament. I mean Porto is a great club but they aren't the best in Europe. That is why the league play must be like this.

Benfica is better than Anderlecht... and the national leagues aren't silly...

You talk in all big clubs but without the national leagues where do you would put the other clubs? And even if the national leagues remains, they wouldn't survive without the big clubs.

I'm not saying they are silly, what I am saying is that the system is silly. Why have a bunch of separate leagues when they all could be combined? It would be the perfect way to measure the best team in the world.

Maybe it should be 25 teams in the leagues with 4 getting relegated and promoted. With so many teams being combined into one system, the leagues must be bigger.

So in that case, add 5 more teams: Parma, Stuttgart, PSG, Leverkusen, and Galatasaray

add Fenerbahçe and take out Parma or Stuttgart. :rockman:

they had this type of thing in fifa 99, called *european dream league* (H)

This would be the ultimate league: Have every single top division team in Europe (whether it be La Liga or Norwegian Tippeligen (sp?) and they can play each other home & away. Sure, the season would go for a few years, but it would represent the best team.

Although, I seriously doubt it...

Round 1:
Arsenal v Red Star.
Real Madrid v Bolton.
AC Milan v Hearts.
Monaco v Royal Antwerp.

ect, ect.

Again, I seriously doubt it. :crazyboy:

(btw, I'm not being serious.)

The Legend
I heard they were trying to do something, with top teams from 2nd tier leagues tho. Starting it in midseason, and using the top teams from those leagues to play off for 10 Champions league places. While the other teams in the leagues that teams were taken from would play for the domestic title and a UEFA cup spot, or spots.

So no, not only an american would think of this.

It's not a bad "idea". It will never get the support needed to happen but it is a logical progression from domestic division to premier leagues to champions league where they crown a champion of the continent.

Don't be so quick to hate on people's ideas, try and figure out what they are saying first.

And he means a real league, not an elimination tournament like UEFA Cup (so it wouldnt take years to finish). It would just be a regular season for a club.

In some ways it also makes sense as it asks less of players in the way of cup competitions affecting national duties and such.

Personally I never think it will happen, it will never get popular support. And it would only make the rich (G14) richer and the poor poorer. I don't even see the point of having two European or domestic cups in one season. Not that it isn't to be enjoyed but this is all just a hypothetical discussion.

yeah .........and who gets left out?

Greece(Panaths.Olymp)
Turkey(Fener, Galatas)
Romania(Steaua)
Russia(CSK)
Portugal(Lisbon,Benfica,...if Porto didn't win it all this year?)

Poor idea my friend.....underdogs and upsets....historic teams returning to glory (RED STAR.....I can dream!!).....make these competitions interesting...

More emphasis needs to be placed on the SuperCups in August...This year Porto/Valencia....this needs to become a "Superbowl" ......and UEFA needs to promote it as such.....Then the UEFA cup will regain the respect it deserves

Yeah I agree I think that if they would make a marketing campaign for the UEFA Cup just as big as the one for the CL it would quickly become more popular.

or how about not

whats with all the american noobs coming here recently asking for the game to be changed. "ooh, we need video referees" "oh why cant we have a superleague" "david becham should be forced to play naked so i can wank while watching, and thus make my life that bit more time efficient"

if you don't like the sport, don't watch it. noone wants you're commercial bull****. finding the best team? what if one of the teams not listed have a better team? why don't we just award real madrid every club trophy, and brazil every national trophy?

maybe lakers should automatically have been awarded the nba championship. that way, there is no team an underdog like detroit could cause an upset

Wat the hell is an umlaut? An it wouldnt be a good idea for all the lower class clubs like Brescia or Bolton.

No teams would get left out. All of the pro teams in Europe would get put into this league. Of course there'd end up being like over 100 leagues, but remember, this is purely hypothetical.

Stop making generalizations about people and things you don't know. I didn't say I don't like the sport, dumba**. I love the sport. Maybe if you knew anything about me you'd know that. And if you would've actually read the post, you would've known that I only listed the teams for the first league. The teams ranked from 26-50 would get put in the second league. So if a team that wasn't listed was better, it would get promoted.

And of course like any European league, it could have a big, all league tournament. That way smaller teams could still pull of upsets.

And what are you talking about, the Lakers aren't the best team. They didn't even get the best record in the west, and they lost the series fair and square.

With this new league, there will be an undisputed champion. I don't get it. No one claims about regular league games in Europe not having upsets, but then with this superleague there are problems with it. This is just like any regular European league, except with all of the teams in one system things would be better.

And why do you think I'm 'commercial'? I was the one that wrote the 'Football is too commercialized' thread. I'm socialist for God's sake, I'm not commercial.
