2006-07 Euroleague Draw is complete!!
The 2006-07 Euroleague season is off to a very special start! The Euroleague Draw, held on Thursday at the world-renowned Athens Concert Hall at Megaron, produced regular season groups that guarantee drama from the very first games in October. Euroleague defending champion CSKA Moscow will be in Group C along with Winterthur FC Barcelona, Benetton Treviso and Zalgiris Kaunas, among others. Group B features six reigning domestic league champions: Maccabi Elite Tel Aviv, Panathinaikos, Unicaja, Cibona, Union Olimpija and Partizan. And Group A is loaded with classic Euroleague teams such as Tau Ceramica, Olympiacos, Efes Pilsen and Climamio Bologna.

All 24 teams will be aiming to return to Athens next May for the 2007 Final Four. "We all know the passion of the Greek fans for basketball," Euroleague Basketball CEO Jordi Bertomeu told the draw guests. "We know that Greece is a country for basketball." Thursday's draw ceremony was highlighted by the presentation of the Coach of the Year award to Ettore Messina and the Club Executive of the Year award to Sergey Kushchenko, both from current champion CSKA Moscow. The opening game of the season was also announced for Monday, October 23 and will feature DKV Joventut hosting Panathinaikos in Badalona, Spain. The competition system is set, the groups have been chosen and the regular season calendar is published. Check out the reaction to the draw and get ready for a super new Euroleague season!

TEAM FOCUS: Fenerbahçe Ulker
Even though the 2006-07 season marks its debut in the Euroleague, Fenerbahce Ulker Sport is far from a rookie where it matters most, on the court. The dean of Turkish coaches, Aydin Ors, and a group of veterans give Fenerbahce fans every reason to expect competitiveness from the first tipoff. Drawn in part from Ulker teams that never missed a Top 16 in the Euroleague, the new Fenerbahce claims more than just years of experience on a roster with eight players 28 or older. There is sharpshooter Ibrahim Kutluay, the only Turkish player to have ever won a Euroleague crown. There is rebounding ace Mirsad Turkcan, a two-time Euroleague MVP choice and three-time Final Four participant. And there is super-talent Will Solomon, coming off his first Final Four experience. The list gets longer and stronger. Inside, centers Kaspars Kambala, Oguz Savas and Semih Erden offer plenty of size and toughness. On the perimeter veterans Damir Mrsic and Ira Clark promise leadership and scoring. From the bench, Omer Onan, Zeki Gulay and Rasim Basak add all-purpose help. Together, they bring something few Euroleague newcomers can count on, the know-how to make immediate impact in the continent's top competition.

Backcourt production is assured by Solomon, Mrsic and Kutluay. After averaging the second most points in both the Euroleague regular season and Quarterfinal Playoffs last year, Solomon kept rolling all the way to the Final Four and led all scorers in the title game, even though he and Maccabi lost. Mrsic, despite being one of the oldest active Euroleague players, has never stopped scoring, thanks to a knack for winning and an outside shot that few can match for consistent accuracy.Yet more firepower comes from Kutluay, who can play big guard or small forward, and is still capable of getting as hot as any shooter in Europe. All will be aided by one of Turkey's best young point guards Hakan Demirel, who got valuable experience as a starter at the 2006 World Championships, and by ever-solid Omer Onan, who brings energy to both the offense and the defense.

If the frontcourt will be key to Fenerbahce's aspirations, a major key to that frontcourt will be Turkcan, the continent’s top rebounder all decade, and the Euroleague’s best returning board man from last season. If Turkcan can keep guaranteeing rebounds, Kambala can be his perfect low-post scoring complement. Working with his back to the basket, Kambala has been known to change entire games.Indeed, from his previous seasons in the competition, Kambala still shares the Euroleague record for points in a single game, 41. Both of them will have teenage big men Oguz Savas, almost a double-digit scorer in last season's Top 16, and Semih Erden, who likewise has some Euroleague experience already, to count on for help in the paint. Yet more expertise is brought to the table by veteran swing forward Ira Clark, who can play inside or out, running or banging. Rounding out the forwards are steady defensive force Zeki Gulay and energetic Rasim Basak.

On a team that boasts so much experience, that of one man in particular, Ors, will be of utmost importance. Indeed, a steady hand to guide a group of proven pros might be all that Fenerbahce needs to celebrate the club's 100th anniversary, and first Euroleague season, in high style.
