Yes, it matters A LOT what he won at Porto to dismantle comments like 'he was successful at Chelsea because of money'. It wasn't the money, obviously, and for two reasons:
a) he already proved he was the best even with little money to spend;
Then Alex Ferguson should win it just because he won the treble a few years back. Great logic.

b) as if ManU and Arsenal have cheap players and scarce funds. Riiiiiight.
Arsenal bought all their key players for cheap, Reyes was an exception. Man United's core came from the own youth.

yup...the highest they've ever finished in the epl is fourth. Another point Moyes is the only manager in the history of everton to finish above liverpool.

Also Imagine....last season he was relived due to not getting relegated..now his teams finished fourth....whereas Jose has all cash he needs.

Mourinho is great, Robbo is fine, but what Moyes achieved this season is fantastic... sure, Liverpool and other contenders for the 4th place were underperforming, but no one in their wildest dream would have thought Everton could be in the CL next season, so I have to say Moyes was the best of the season imho

If someone says SAF is a lousy coach, then you could point the contrary, namely because he already proved his worth by winning the treble - and our respect - in the past. Likewise, if someone accuses Mourinho of winning trophies just because of all the money he has available to spend on players, we can just look back 12 months and realize it isn't so.

I'll make it more clear to you: Mourinho shouldn't win because he was successful with Porto in the past; that, however, proves money wasn't the key factor for his success (I mean, you'd have to be stupid if you thought that was it).

I'm sure everybody but you understood the 'great logic' the first time.

not quite...

while this is the first time in the PREMIERSHIP that Everton have finished 4th, and the first time in the PREMIERSHIP that we've finished above Liverpool, it isnt the first time in our history that its been achieved... how the hell did we win the league in 1915, 1928, 1932, 1939, 1963, 1970, 1985 & 1987 and finish behind Liverpool?! (The reason I say this is that you didnt specify in the days since the Premiership was formed!)

League Champions:
1891, 1915, 1928, 1932, 1939, 1963, 1970, 1985, 1987

I think that's a little better than 4th... HOWEVER... in the history of the PREMIERSHIP, it's the highest we've gotten to! :rockman: :jambo: :Carlos*o:

Moyes. What he has done is a real achievement especially when you consider that he has lost two of his best players this season. Mourinho has been so good that he needed to buy several million worth of players to achieve one place higher than last season and no more (unless you count the Carling Cup as a real trophy). Robson has been pretty good too although a lot of his success was down to luck on the last day.

Did anyone say Mourinho's a lousy coach? No. He did a fantastic job at making a team out of a bunch of star players. Not many coaches are capable of that like Real Madrid's recent history has proved.

This trophy is not a for anyone's career achievements but for this season's season success. I simply rate higher what Moyes has done with his team. Everton two cornerstones but managed to get the 4th spot - a team that struggled not getting relegated last year. Mourinho won the league convincingly with a squad that was to the best the Premier League has seen in the past decade. That's why I rate Moyes' season higher.

They might be star players now Vince but they were not so much star players when he started....a high price tag dont make a player a star......performance does that.Chelsea did not have to compete with anyone to buy most of our squad....if they were stars then perhaps more clubs would have been interested in them.Add to that ....the most outstanding players at Chelsea this season were already there when Jose arrived. He made some good choices of who to throw out( Crespo,Veron etc)those were decisions of a brave knowledgable manager. Not many managers would have told those two to p.i.ss off,but he did because he saw that they were not gonna fit in.
I dont like one or two players in our team at all but now i trust Jose when he says that they will come right....now it takes a great manager to convince a cynic like me that s.h.i.t can be turned into gold.
Moyes did do well ,but that was mainly due to the poor competition that was offered to him by other teams throughout the season and not so much to do with his skills as a manager. But if the old farts at HQ have taken a shine to ol' Dave then good luck to him.Actually its quite nice that the winner wasn't a manager of one of the "big " clubs.

No, but I did read someone say his success at Chelsea was because of the money he had available. That's what my response was aimed at.

I think we all understood what this trophy stood for.
Mourinho won the league with a club that had one 50-years-old title in its bag, with a group of players with unquestionable value but with everything still to prove, and did it breaking a couple league records on the way. My question is: what could have he done to be more successful, and thus deserve the award this thread refers to?

pede, I agree that Mourinho is awesome and would really deserve the manager of the year award.... IF it wasn't for Moyes' achievements... Chelsea winning the premier league after 50 years is a great achievement and to make a team out of a bunch of money is made through a lot of hard work... but Moyes made it to the Champions League without any star players, and as tough as it is to make stars play, it's much harder imho to take Everton to the CL without Rooney and Gravesen who were Everton's top players and still then they're not exactly Makelele and Robben
