This is just my opinion, and maybe you think Im biased because Im Australian, but remember Im a huge Liverpool fan aswell, and I think english people (in particular) are overly critical of Lucas Neill because of a poorly timed tackle he made that broke a leg...One tackle doesnt make a player, and I still dont think there was mallice in the tackle.

Because of that one tackle, a guy that was statistically rated the EPLs best RB in his first full year in the position (by OPTA) and was the right back of the week more than any other player that same year, english people seem to think the guy cant play, or is overly physical. He was an absolute standout in the World Cup, and I think, along with Cannavaro, during the tournament was the best central defender out there...He didnt get in the team of the tournament, because i) he was playing for an Australian side that I cant imagine players were even really considered for the team of the tourney out of, and ii) Australia was knocked out at the Round of 16. Consider for a few of the games, Neill kept the last 30mins scoreless as basically the ONLY defender on the pitch. Emerton and Chipperfield were pushing forward as wingbacks, and we subbed off our other central defender chasing goals...Im sure anyone that saw his performances during the World Cup, I mean actually watched Australian games in the entireity and not just the highlights, would agree....Carvalho is probably a better player, but wasnt during the World Cup, which is what the side should be decided on...But hey, Neill is just that thug from that non-football nation, Australia...

Anyway, watch how he handled the Brazilian attack, in that game (how many guys can perfectly time a tackle against Ronaldinho one on one like he did), watch his performance against Italy in the Rnd of 16 (where he unfaily had a penalty given against him), watch his performance against Croatia, AND as a sole defender for the last 20-30mins against Japan....

Im sure most people dont really care, but I just get sick of people, it seems english people in particular, who just accuse him of being a thug...Do you watch the games, or just read the Sun? Im guessing that half the guys that seem to make these judgements would be Sun or Mirror readers, or even the Star, who didnt watch a small nation like Australia play in the World Cup, and probably cant count high enough to understand how someone like OPTA stats could give out player ratings...

Anyways, wanted to get that off my chest, and as a Liverpool fan, Im really hoping he joins us...As a RB or a CB (even a back up LB) he would be an awesome buy...

YELLOW CARD - Sarcasm
Alex, its not the mis-timed tackle that people hated. Its the idea that he then stood over Baros telling him to get up and stop diving.

Its not like its the only time its happened either.

agree with Liam, ive seen Lucas Neill do it too many times Alex. I dont disagree he's a good player, but the mentality at Blackburn is horrible, and Neill is (IMO) an idiot who, if without his football talents, would just be a thug.

Just my opinion.

He reminds me of this Aussie player we have at Northampton, very phyiscally strong and fast and could run around all day, but is sometimes a tad reckless and tends to jump in rather than to stand his ground.

When he arrived in England the manager asked him where he played and which his reply was:

"Right Stopper, mate" :crazyboy:

IMO Neill is class. Im an aussie 2 and neill was superb during the WC, the only problem with neill is playing under the blackburn mentality. Under Hiddink at the WC he was tamed by the Genius of Guus, but as soon as he came back to the Prem he was sent off in his 1st game for 2 reckless challenges - under the guidance of Mark Huges. If neill went to pool im sure that he would be tamed by Benitez.

Neill is a quality defender - everybody should stop being pussies and enjoy hard but clean challenges...

Skysports.com can reveal that Liverpool have lodged a bid for Lucas Neill.

The Reds are now waiting to hear from Blackburn as to whether or not they are willing to do business.

Neill is entering the last year of his contract and has made it clear to Rovers that he is highly unlikely to be signing a new deal.

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez is keen to bolster his defensive options and that fact that Neill can play anywhere across the back four is sure to appeal.

Neill was outstanding during the World Cup finals for Australia, where he operated in central defence - while during his time at Blackburn he has established himself as one of the most competent defenders in The Premiership.

Blackburn are keen to keep Neill, but they are already looking at alternatives with Manchester City's Danny Mills top of their list.

Mills is keen to secure regular first team football and Mark Hughes is keen to offer him the chance of a move to Ewood Park.

The likes of Tottenham and Newcastle are also keen to land Neill, but Liverpool look very much in pole position to secure his signature.
