no one expected the US to blow up the Czechs, however, it did not seem completely unreasonable to hope for a close game or a tie. What everyone is so outraged about is the lack of passion on the field and the way they lost. Losing 3-nil is a whole lot different form losing 1-nil. The Americans didn't look like they wanted to be there much less win the game.

I think most people expected Czech Republic to batter U.S.A , everyone except the usa who believe they are 5th best team in the world. rofl.
The thing is, people here dont understand that. They are prepped for the World Cup all of a few weeks in advance, and the spin machine is all they know.

Empirical Evidence made available to the average sport fan here who turns on the World Cup
1. The best players are Ronaldinho, Henry, Zidane, Nedved, Beckham (yes), and on par with them is Landon Donovan
2. Brazil are very good
3. The US beat Portugal and Mexico to get to the round of 8 last time out
4. The US is in the group of death (wrong, obviously)
5. America has slowly gotten better with each international showing
6. According to Alexi Lalas, Kasey Keller is the best keeper in the world
7. The US is ranked 5th in the World, with no explaination of how the rankings are devised, or how widely dismissed they are as a measure of what a team can do

Based on these threadbare "facts" its easy to see why Americans are optimistic, and its entirely down to the lack of Football exposure/intrest in this country. I know how good the Czech's play as a team, and I told my dad they would serve the US, but even he bought into the hype

Talent wise? I think the US falls just short of the likes of Baros, Nedva, etc.

What can you base the talent on? You rarely play teams of any quality and most of the US players play in the MLS... and we all know the MLS is nothing special.
For the players that play in England and Germany etc, they're nothing special... :-/ Fulham, Man City, Reading? I love Fulham, lol, but come on, we're no Man United. You can't compare them to anything... Landon Donovan is very overrated... he might be one of the best in the MLS again, but again, that's the MLS. And then you could say, well we beat Mexico, and they're a good quality side. Well, it's a huge derby, of course the US will raise their game. Fulham beat Chelsea, we were better than them on the day.... but we're not better than Chelsea.

Actually I don't think USA made a bad match, Czech Republic is a very hard side to play against. But maybe your trust in USA capacity is bigger than mine.

I can understand why the Americans are pissed. The Czech's played a damn good game, however i would expect my team to at least turn up.

I think Blueballa hit the nail on the head. There seems to be this misconception among fans (not on this board) and the media, etc in the US that they are 5th in the rankings and thus should be progressing well into the later stages of the competition. When in reality we know the US have progressed so far up the rankings because the quality of opposition in their qualifying confederation is below that of other confederations.

Yes the Czechs are a good side, but USA showed no real quality or cutting edge... I would of liked to see the US to go on and do well (not that I was expecting anything), but I was deeply disappointed :nape:

Czech Republic could of scored way more, until their player started to get injuried. Czech is trying to win the group on DF if it comes down to that, because knowone wants to face Brazil if they come in 2nd.

I said African Countries not BLACK countries. If I said that countries are fast because their players are black that would have also included Trinidad and Tobago, which they were clearly not. I have already watched 2 african countries in this world cup and they are both full of speed merchants and watching Ghana, it seems the same factor is present. Please stop twisting my words. Jankulovski has 22 games for AC Milan since 2005 and was a top player for Udinese before that. Landon Donovan was terrible for Bayer Leverkusen, quoted from Wikipedia, "In early 2005, after again failing to perform for Bayer, most notably a dreadful performance in the UEFA Champions League against Liverpool, Donovan stated his intentions to come back to MLS." Basically he couldnt perform at a higher stage, making only 7 appearences for Bayer.

Whatever, if I wanted to make a REALLY big deal out of infering some racism I would have. I didn't really completely call you out. Just be careful...

About Donovan, he went over to Leverkusen when he was very young, probably 17, and he was in the amatures pretty much the entire time. He got homesick and tired of not being on the first team (and probably a lot of other things happened) and so he decided to come to the MLS on a loan which turned out to be like 3 years.

Then he went back to Leverkusen and he was pretty much done by January if I remember correctly. He's homesick. It's his choice to play in the MLS and that's really all there is to it. You can't base his ability on 7 games with Leverkusen, especially since he was homesick. I say that a lot, but it's true, he's very close with his family. Most of us in America wish he played for a major club, but it doesn't look like he'll ever let that happen and we have to honor that decision. The MLS is not as bad as it once was, just keep that in mind. When Beckham comes over here at 35 and sucks, it shouldn't be a shock.

That's untrue and frankly it's a little racist to say the African teams are the fastest. They really aren't, the fastest teams are probably Brazil and Spain.

However except for you assuming the African teams are fast because they're black, I agree with everything you said. Although I don't like the assumption that just because someone is at a top club means they are world class. As an example Jankulovski played like 3 games this season for AC Milan. Donovan is in MLS by choice because apparantly he gets homesick when he lives abroad.

you must be suffering from some afterloss bad mood syndrom or something.

Everyone knows black guys tend to be naturally fitter and run faster. Or is it just a coincidence that 99% of speed runners are black?

I can't see how acknowledging that fact qualifies as racism.

Hmmm, you said in your earlier post that I assumed that players were fast because they were black. I countered this arguement and believe that the african game is based more on pace, what do I have to be careful about?

And then he wasn't careful. Yes, i'm absolutely in a terrible mood right now, but that doesn't change much of what I'm saying.

There has never been anything proven about blacks being better athletes. Never. Is it a coincidence? Well, yeah it probably is. You won't get lashed out at here on SG, but if you posted this on another forum I go to you would be blasted as a racist by just about everyone. There are athletic freaks of both colors and the average white guy or asian guy is just as athletic as the average black guy.

well, i've a tenner riding on the US getting to the last 16, and i have to agree with the first few posts - disapointing performance.

I still think either them or the Czech's will get something against the Italians.
