This picture summarizes it perfectly. Donovan is a little homesick pussy who cannot handle being away from his sister.
ROFL!, Kahn should of spat at him.

WTF that is a 3 year old picture from the WC :|. I think Donovan needs to find an EPL team where he can play on a regular basis because his style of play works perfectly with the EPL.

Donovan should sign for a smaller Bundesliga club, preferably Mainz (where Casey is) or M'gladbach. I don't see him ever cementing a spot in Leverkusen's starting 11.
I can definitely see him cementing a spot in Leverkusen's starting 11, if he stays at the club and puts in the work. Competing for a starting position is good for him at this stage of his career, rather than having a guaranteed spot in the starting XI like he does in MLS and the US NT.

Items of note in the article: Mom is unaware and girlfriend is unaware:
(Quote)
Donovan is in Mexico City with the national team, preparing for a World Cup qualifying match Sunday vs. Mexico. He did not return a message left on his cell phone Friday night, and the switchboard operator at the team hotel said he was not a registered guest.

Two sources close to him denied knowledge of a his looming return from Germany.

"That's the first I've learned of it,' said Donna Kenney-Cash, Donovan's mother. "I just don't know' if it's true.

"I actually know nothing about that,' said actress Bianca Kajlich, Donovan's girlfriend of two years. "I've been getting bombarded with phone calls.'

Kajlich lives in Sherman Oaks, about 30 miles from the Galaxy's home at Home Depot Center in Carson.

"You'd think if anybody would know, it would be me,' she said. [end quote]

[Editorial - kind of hard to be running home to mamma and gf if they don't even know you're coming, don't ya think?]

Also of note in the article, full comments by Donovan about his playing time:
(quote)
Usually, Donovan appeared as a late substitute at midfield.

"What can you do in 15 minutes,' he asked in an interview earlier this month. "I'm the kind of player who needs to play regularly to be confident and improve.'

He also suggested he is not comfortable with the German style. "There's not a lot of room for creativity,' he said. "It's hard, because it's not the style I know. (end quote)

So both his mom and his girlfriend are completely unaware of any move back to the US.

This is exactly what I was gonna say. I think he'd suit the English game, there are allot of teams looking for that type of player too

He's like Hakan Sukur, he lack's the confidence to make an impact in soccer. If he wants to make it big time, he's got to grow up and stick with it. If he can't do it, he should to a smaller team in germany or europe and build up from there. Not to go back from where he started...again. I can't see him doing well outside the states if he stays with that attitude.

I honestly don't want to see him back in the MLS. He is too good to stay in the United States. I would like him to find a team that is a compliment to his style of play and to continue improving.

They'd play him as a forward

Villa don't need Donovan. We have too many attacking options as it is, and if he goes to Villa Park, it'll be back to square one for him. Plus, I don't think Herbert Douglas Ellis OBE will ever give O'Leary the money to buy anyone good *cough* Djemba-Djemba *cough*.

Donovan returns via free transfer

Bayer Leverkusen is set to cancel the contract the midfielder Landon Donovan, paving the way for the embattled 23-year old American to return to MLS on a free transfer.

"The contract will be dissolved and then MLS will decide where he plays," Leverkusen's Uli Dost told YA early Wednesday morning. "It can be assumed that he is returning to America and that he will play there."

When asked if there will be a transfer fee involved, Dost simply replied "No," before adding, "I don't know. They are negotiating that all right now," in regards to a future sell-on fee.

However, a source close to upper management at Leverkusen has revealed to YA, "[Bayer] will definitely be a part of any sell on. They will have that stake until 2008."

Donovan, who originally signed with Leverkusen at 16, appeared in just nine matches for the club since returning to the club in January, registering no goals and two assists.

After a poor performance against Liverpool in the Champions League and seeing no action in the two matches following, Donovan is invoking a clause in his contract which will allow him to sign in the United States.

"It came from Donovan himself. He spoke to the trainer and asked if he could return to America," Dost continued. "He wants a team, he wants to play and also [play] for America at the World Cup and deemed his chances to be better there."

"Of course, the separation from his girlfriend also played a role and he decided to go back."

"He is a consummate professional and was accepted positively. But I think that he put himself too much under pressure for the Liverpool game and it didn't go the way he expected it to. I think that also had an impact [on his decision]."

Unconfirmed speculation has linked Donovan to California side Los Angeles Galaxy, hated intrastate rivals of previous club San Jose Earthquakes, with whom he won two MLS Cup titles.

In the bandied scenario, Los Angeles would send Guatemalan striker Carlos Ruiz to FC Dallas 96 in return for an allocation which would clear up the needed salary cap room required to acquire Donovan.

I was thinking the same thing. If he didn't make an impact on soccer, then i don't know what it takes to do that.
