Disk check (or chkdsk) is too slow?

Hi everyone, I have a question. Everytime I use the Disk Check feature in Windows (or the command "chkdsk" in CMD) to scan my external hard disk drive, it always take more than 12hrs. Do you know any solution for this? What should I change in the OS's configuration to speed up this process? If not, then is there any software that can do similarly but faster?

By the way, my operating system is Windows 7 and my external hard drive is 1TB.

Is your HD USB 2 or 3? And if you've ticked "automatically recover bad sectors" (or something similar) then it will take MUCH longer than a standard scan.

why do you have to run chkdsk so much on the drive ?
what are you doing to the drive that windows feels the need to run chkdsk ?

For some reason (probably my usb slots or something about power), my external hdd sometimes auto- disconnected and reconnected. That's why I have to scan it occasionally, because I fear it may be dead one day (just like my old hdd). I have some important and some old-but-not-useless data in it. It took me years to collect those and I can't afford to lose them.

Have you tried testing with other drives before to see if there's the same problem? If it's a power supply issue, it should happen with the other ones too.

it may be a power issue or the usb ports are on their way out.

could also be due to windows or the external powering itself down when not in use which 2 of my media drives do.

This is the suggestion that you would get if you were to simply take the thing to a PC repair shop. They would do it for you for a fee but it can be done at home for free, with a bit of care.
