Direct IP, Routers, Firewalls, DMZ and Port Forwarding

I suspect that there are a great deal of us out there having problems connecting through Direct IP. Alot of us are behind firewalls/routers.

I have an Ipaq Wireless Connection Point/Router (CP-2W) that doesn't have an obvious Port Forwarding option. I've enabled DMZ, played around with Packet Filtering and Virtual Servers. The best I've had is having a guy connect to me, choose controllers/teams etc. Just as the game would start the connection would drop with a connection error. I'm stuck for answers now.

Please lets use this thread to discuss these issues...

Is there anyone out there, behind a router/firewall, that is able to play Direct IP successfully? If so, I'd love to hear from you.

Behind Linksys 54g wireless router with Norton Firewall also running - have no problems with Direct IP. May be just lucky.

My Linksys BEFSR41 router works great with online games. My IP isn't DMZ-ed. I could host games with no problems with FIFA 2003- but with 2004, the game kept freezing. I've only tried hosting once, so maybe it was a freak occurrance. When playing as a client though, the connection is extremely smooth. I have the appropriate port set up for 'forwarding'.

I updated the firmware to 1.45.7 last night, so maybe that will help with hosting. I don't host much anyway, so I'm not really bothered. I connect to other people's PC's with no problem whatsoever.

I'm happy to confirm that FIFA 2004 does work 100% with the Linksys BEFSR41 router. I hosted a game a few hours ago, and the connection was perfect. I forwarded UDP port 3658 (I also have UDP port 3659 forwarded for NHL 2004). I used standard Port Forwarding, not Up'n'p or port triggering. I tested the game without my software firewall on. I played via Direct IP- a friend connected to my PC. I have a static LAN IP address, and the game packets are directed to my specific LAN IP. No need to DMZ my machine!

well heres my prob..
i'm behind a uni firewall.. the connection is supposedly 1 Mb but when i log on to EA's matchup i get outta-this-world pings like 15000 and so on.. when i start the game the connection is crappy of course...
I thought my connection was crap but then i tried playing Counter-Strike online and my max ping was no more than 150...
so is my problem only fifa-related??
by the way i tried pinging www.bbc.co.uk but that didn't work, also most online speed tests that i tried take too long or don't seem to work.. but normal web pages seem to load up pretty fast.
I'd really appreciate any help on this
cheers

update: I just found a speed test site that works.. heres the results:

Test Results

Download size: 500 KB
Download time: 117.703 seconds
Download speed: 34 Kbps (kilobits per second)

pathetic... but then why does it load up web pages quickly and why do i get a good ping in counter strike??

btw the site also said it might be useful to download something called MTU.. is that any good?

FIFA TCP/IP required ports

Just some extra info for those of you with Routers.

Straight from EASports:

FIFA 2004 uses the following TCP and UDP ports for Internet play:

Note that if you have a firewall and want to play online, the following TCP/IP ports
must be open in the outbound direction:
HTTP 80 TCP/IP
HTTPS 443 TCP/IP
MsgConn/IM 13500 TCP/IP
Roomsvr 23701-23709 TCP/IP

The following UDP ports must be opened for game packets, for the outbound and inbound connections
Game Packets 3658 UDP

Chances are that the MsgConn/IM and the Roomsvr ports are not needed unless you want to play on EASO

Hey Rich can you contact me on ICQ#115242264 and help me try and setup a direct TCP game...I've had it work against players here in North America but need to try it with someone overseas.
