Derlei in the portuguese NT?

the portuguese FA chairman Gilberto Madail told today to the press that he don't have objections to a possible call of the brazilian striker Derlei that will acquire the portuguese citizenship soon.

"we live in a global world so why not call this players that speak the same language that us and that as our mentality and like codfish with potatoes?" said Madail

So to all players of the world: if you like potatoes with codfish you have a place in the portuguese team

Not going to happen. Portugal has about 1 naturalized player (Deco) in the last 25 years. That´s a residual number specially if you compare it with some of the Nt´s in Europe. This Derlei affair won`t happen, i bet this is just some lobby from the media who is trying to start more problems for Scolari. Madaíl is just a pawn, he doesn´t have the influence to submit this to appreciation.

I think Derlei's a great player but I really hope this doesn't happen, not because he's Brazilian (I'm glad to have Deco on the NT) but because it's just taking a spot from other players who should get preference. Nuno Gomes still has many years ahead of him on the NT, and I think we should start giving more chances to guys like Postiga and Makukula for example..

I disagreed with Deco being on the NT from the start but if it happened with Deco..... I don't see how the Derlei case is different.

Now agreeing with Deco and objecting with Derlei being in the squad that's contraditory.


Anyhow Derlei is a great striker, better and more consistent than Pauleta in my opinion so considering his value only, I would be delighted to see him play for our national team.

The good players are always welcome.

Deco was great. Derlei could be too... or not.

I'm in favour of this. But not to all players. People tend to exagerate when talking about these citizenship processes. It is usually thought when someone agrees on having a great player not born in our country, in our NT, they think "what's left now is to call up all the brazilians in our league aswell!". That's an invalid argument.

if you agree to call one player, and it's not by one or two particular reasons other than his value as a player, you should do it to all available regarding only their value.

It just wouldn't be fair to deny this opportunity to Derlei or to anyone just because of their double nationality, when you allow Deco to join the NT. It's double standards.

This should not be allowed, players should atleast have some sort of heritage inorder to be part of the NT. Citizenship is not good enough, we need to make some changes. Club football is different then international, so you can't just join any team you want. Like Ailton has been offered to play in Qatar for money. I thought players play for pride of their country, not pride of country that they wish they were a part of or for personal benefits like money and captain arm-band. Hopefully fifa will end this crap.

Probably Pauleta but he may not start every game if he still is in terrible form and with Derlei coming to the team.

Derlei would be a great addition to the Portuguese NT who I've always seen as being sorta weak upfront in comparison to other European powerhouses.
